But I can only afford the cheapest 20" iMac ($1299) on the Canadian website.

SHould I go for this or the $999 24" LED display and hook it up to my MBP?

Screen size is important to me...I like big, but I also HATE having to disconnect/reconnect my MBP.

WOW, you certainly found the exact wrong forum to post up about getting a desktop.

With us being so close to an iMac refresh (some rumours are even suggesting tomorrow but in all likelihood it's more like two weeks away) you have to hold on for a little longer. If only to see what's coming and/or maybe take advantage of the drop in price that's sure to come on the current units after the new ones are released.

LOL, I Love shooting old MACs with my 44 MAG :D. They are great for target practice. Current MACs are just PC's without a right mouse button anyways.

Maybe I should add all of the SGI and Power PC machines I've had to my sig in order to make you Apple heads feel better about your right mouse button envy. Anyway... This forum is for Notebooks not desktops.

Ha! Have you seen Wynonna's mug shoot. It's classic. Am I wrong to say that this site is dedicated to notebooks not desktops? I mean, what is all the hate about? It is NotebookReview not DesktopReview right?

And DesktopReview is so dead that it's not even funny.

You are aware that all Mac desktops have a right click, aren't you? (Besides that, I've had a right clicking mouse for 10 years).

All rumours point to March as the month for apple updates. Thus I would really see if you can hold out. Its suggested that there will be 3-4 versions of the iMac, and its quite possible that there will be a 20" cinema display... So this should give you lots of different options... not to mention possible discounts on older refurb. models.

With the ACD it is just 1 more cable you have to pull. It acts like a USB hub so the total number of cables might even be less. $999 is borderline 30" territory however so might want to give that a thought a well.

Good job dude! I hope you''ll like it! I adore my father's one, it made me wanna get myself a mac. I would definitely get the Imac if i didn't need the extra-portability for school-appartment-parent's places-etc.

Yeah I'm kind of in the opposite as you. It's nice having a laptop but I'm finding that I miss having a desktop and having this at home will be nice. I won't have to pull out my laptop from my bag.

    Wow I am so lazy!

I found that surprisingly, the extra 4" does make a huge difference.

I was looking at LCD displays at Best Buy and those 4" go a long way.

    Lord... Being lazy is expensive.
Yeah mine is the 20'' OSX Tiger one, and I think 20'' is more than enough, I love it! I guess 24'' is better...but never tried it. I'm not a big fan of huge screen... I've been working with a 15,4'' laptop the other day and I thought it would be perfect for everyday use, I would not need to get and external monitor imho. That's why I consider the mbp instead of the mb + bunch of externals...

Not sure...but thats what it says on the website.

    http://store.apple.com/ca/browse/home/shop_mac/family/imac?mco=MTE2NjM

    The 2.66 one says 9400 M.

I use my computer for general stuff, like you. I don't do much graphics (except gaming on my MBP), email, internet, itunes, messenger, watch a DVD etc.

My MBP is wayy too powerful for my needs. But that just means I won't have to upgrade for a long time which will save me money in the long run. I have apple care for my MBP so I am going to use it at least until Dec 31/2011 (I got this one on Dec 31 2008 lol).

Yeah, you could say I don't need it, and I don't need this much power, and I'm stupid for buying these things. But whatever, I like my gadgets.

Ah, you're situation is pretty much exactly like mine. I dunno if you also are a student but I have a bunch of papers to produce on word, stuff on excel and several powerpoint presentations also. It's sure that I won't buy anything else if I get the MBP, which would be more than adequate for all my tasks. The MB option is interesting too but will prolly bring more purchases on the long run... a monitor or a desktop like you for exemple lol.

Yes sir I am a student and trust me you will be using your computer a lot.

You should also think about WHERE you'd use your computer. If you stay at home a lot I guess you could do the LCD/MB option. But if you plan on using it away a lot (like at the library) then perhaps MBP is better.

I surely found myself always in my school's library, which is the quietest place to study. I'm always there, so MBP for me. iMac for home.

The updates were a little disapointing imo.

If you have a macbook pro I would suggest just getting the monitor. I use mine through either a 40" Sony Bravia LCD or a 24" Benq LCD. The BEST method is to get a USB mouse and keyboard as well, plug those into your mac and for all intents and purposes it feels EXACTLY like you are on a desktop (the benefit of a full size keyboard + mouse cannot be underestimated).

Just received my iMac...oh boy is it nice. The screen is absolutely amazing. Although I hear the Cinema is better...any thoughts? I havent' seen the CD in person long enough so I can't comment.

I'm not going bother post pictures because I'm sure you guys know what it looks like. All in all I think it was a great purchase and I absolutely love it.

I recommend this for those who can't afford the Mac Pro, but don't want the iMac mini.

The cinema looks really good. Better than the iMac screen. But the iMac screen is reasonably good (as good as Sony Vaio all-in-one desktop).
