so my gf's macbook just shut down on her last nite while she was writing an email. from then on it wouldnt boot back up. thing is the laptop's fans and hdd spin for about 10 seconds then shut off everytime i press the power button, but nothing on the scree, no chime, no power led. nothing. Laptop and battery charge. Wonder if its really dead. =(

btw does apple care assess your laptop for free or is there a charge?

immediatly after you power up press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination and hold it to reset the PRAM

if that does not get anything let us know here

and Apple has been known to charge for an assessment especially if it is off Applecare.

will do. i tried that last night and there was nothing but i might have done it wrong. i held those keys down then pressed the power button. and the fan and hdd would kick on and then off 10 seconds later.

Give it a second try, with you not getting any chime and an imediate shutdown I am suspecting the mainboard

is it even worth it to get this back up and running? or should i just cut my losses, sell it on ebay and get a netbook. its just for my gf who browses the web and does occasional word documents.

if you WANT to go and verify at the apple store you can, but if its the board like we suspect and its no longer under warranty ... time to get rid of it for parts, not worth fixing

You could try resetting the SMC. Unplug all 3rd party peripherals and hold down the power button for like 10-15 seconds. Then try and boot up..

Also what colour is the Magsafe adapter when you go to charge the battery?

It is possible that it is a bad fan. My lenovo machine had some bad fan problems in the past and once a technician cleared it of debris so that the sensor could detect the faulty fan and when I tried powering it on, it did the exact same thing as you describe. It may be unlikely in your case but it is still a possibility.

did you try turning it on with power and not battery.... or with battery and no power? if one or the other is faulty, it will sometimes not be able to start up right. Most often its a bad battery... so its a possibility to check. And no the battery doesn't have to be in it for the laptop to work like some people think.

i've tried with battery only, with ac adapter only, and with both. it will not start up.

I hear the fans spinning up but then they shutdown with the laptop after 5 seconds.
