If I plug in a DVI to HDMI converter into my DVI port on my MBP and then connect that HDMI to HDTV will the sound go through the TV?

    Thanks

No, DVI only supports video. Converting it to HDMI doesn't do anything.

converting to HDMI works if you want to use your tv as your monitor :p

I don't know :( I haven't found the mini DP to HDMI converter... but I hope it does!!

The latest LED Cinema Displays have built-in speakers yet don't have a dedicated audio jack to go to the notebook. I would think the sound is coming from the mini DP cable, although I suppose it could be through the USB.

I have the same issue OP, is there anyway to get the sound to the television? The only solution I have figured out is to run my audio to my receiver and just play it that way!

Yea, it must be one or the other, I guess someone who has the new displays can confirm if it is the DP or usb that has the audio?

but it doesn't allocate the same kind of bandwidth to audio as HDMI does so your options are limited in surround sound environments.

Well it says it has 1-8 channels of audio capabilities, but I guess I dont know enough about the compression/bit rate to comment on the specifics of the quality.

apple's displayport doesn't have digital audio out capability.

however, there IS a way to get a single hdmi cable TV input from your macbook pro (that covers audio and video)

for the video signal, you need mini dp --> dvi -->
for the audio signal, you need mini-toslink --> toslink

then take a toslink + dvi ---> hdmi cable. don't know where to find it, but it exists and should work.
