I used Mac The Ripper and Handbrake to rip certain chapters from one of my DVD's but when I play them back (in VLC for the .vbo file and quicktime for the mp4) the video is a bit strange. When ever there is a quick movement on the screen, such as someone waving their hand, then the quality there isnt very good.

The picture because a tad distorted and you can see a series of horizontal lines. Is this normal? Or is it the program's that I'm using? It doesn't look like this on the dvd.

Here is a screenshot of what I mean. Notice how there are lots of lines in the video. (Picture the video showing this, not just the pause frame)

Hmm, does your application have an option to de-interlace output video? It may be that your mp4 encoder is set to low-quality output and is interlacing the video streams to save space. If you can, try upping the quality of the saved video and see if that does anything.

How do you up the quality? Do you mean I should re-rip the video, but set the quality higher?

Yeah, re-rip the video and set your encoder to best quality. Not sure about your program, but there should be an option to change settings for the video encoder... Check the manual perhaps, see if there's an option somewhere? Sorry to be so vague.

You've run facefirst into a brick wall of fun! (Actually, it's not really a brick wall... I just think it's a funny image.)

http://www.100fps.com/ will tell you all you need to know to understand what you're looking at.

I tried the de-interlacing option and it worked. Thanks a lot for the help.

Not a problem. I hate bad dvd-rips, as if it wasn't a pain to pull it all the first time =)
