I was wondering if there is a manufacture that sells a custom backplate with grill bezels or something with the intentions of hopefully dissipating heat a lot quicker.

Nope. Mostly you can only 'mod' it yourself. That's what you get for 'unibody' design

yikes, that would most likely void the warranty. I know I've read mbp can take the heat well up to 100 degrees but the thought of that still frightens me. Perhaps I should just go AW.

Would cooler pad have any affect on the unibody design?

If as the papers say it will take heat that well, the fact that when it reaches 70C, you do not want to touch anywhere on the laptop. Unless you use it stationary, have the keyboard and mouse wirelessly connected and hook up to a monitor then you're good. Otherwise, go for a Dual cores CPU. It will still be blazing fast

I read about someone putting small holes in the bottom of their mbp , as they had an extra backplate and a drill press, and it did seem to run cooler, even though people told him it shouldnt. But it did. :)

Dont remember where I saw that at?

I am pretty sure that 15 inches and above are all quad cores. The OP never said which screen size he prefers.

What are you going to use the laptop for
Will you be running OS X or Win7/Win8 most of the time
    Are you a hardcore gamer?
    Do you like to overclock?

Most importantly, do you REALLY need OS X?

Please answer these questions first :)

must be your area, in our household alone I have 2 hardcore tech daughters ( 17 and 15) and we have the ladies Alienware club in our local city and a Ladies Linux programming group in Calgary. I just find it tends to be very regional

so I need to do it myself? bummer! I was hoping thered be a third party seller.

This is totally offtopic but with the recent rumors of the ivybridge being a possibility for the new macs, is the new cpu known to be lower in temps?

i7 3770K (22nm) is proven to run hotter than Sandy Bridge (32nm) because of the cores being packed closely together

Not sure about mobile quads tho, if you're really not sure and don't like high temps, just buy something like a gaming laptop (sager/alienware)

    :O

Here, hardly any people know how to tweak their hardware, even men. I jelly :(

I don't know if it is living in that climate in the mountains, but I did see more women doing physical labor when I was on vacation two years ago unlike in chicago, where all the airport pulleys and such were driven by men. I have to say that communist countries take the cake as far as gender roles are concerned viz men and women.

I guess that I did digress in some other direction, but I also don't see that many women in the tech world right now. I don't know the ratios of men vs. women, though women are generally studying more these days compared to men, but that is for the future.

were not quite communist here ;) but yes we do seem to be much more gender neutral in labor related jobs. I know numerous women in the trades including myself.

when I was on vacation in Florida with my family I got numerous strange looks for having a licence for semi tractors, and a journeyman ticket for cabinet making. and I found THAT strange

That was my thread. All three of my UMBP are done that way. All still running like a champ. Game all day in bootcamp with WOT or WOW and my Gpu never goes above 72c. CPU can get up to 80, but it never reaches that 95 like it used to.

Everyone Said my MBP would die ASAP, and that Apple engineers know exactly what they are doing, that the Keyboard is where the system pulls air in. Pull the back plate off and start your Mac in OSX, use SMC fan control and max out your fans. Now turn you mac on the side with the screen open, then slowly place the back plate back on with your fans on max. Listen to them struggle pushing air through. Pull the back plate off again and listen again. This is just simply aesthetics before usability. Granted the first attempt looked terrible but it was just a work in process. I have since Seen a guy who has completely checkered is backplate and his UMBP runs even cooler. Especially with a cooling pad below. He had acces to a CNC and it looked pretty damn clean.

I have received multiple Nasty messages regarding that thread. And stopped posting on this site for a while. Seemed to many people didn't like me changing the color of the koolaid. I have been very fortunate that I get to travel and play with all kinds of systems. My Macs are my Road warriors, nothing comes close to form, battery life and reliability. I have bounced my MBP from helicopters to crew trucks and they stand up like a champ. (That why I own three lol.) Just wish I could find a small backback that holds up as well.

But if your into Gaming and looking for a nice cool running system, then I would highly recommend a Clevo/Sager. My son has the NP8150HM with the 6990m (his HP Envy was POS), it's big and heavy and the power supply is "OMG" huge but he plays everything maxed out at 1080, and it hardly breaks a sweat. And best of all it cost less then any of my MBP's with specs to make my MBP cry. I was quite proud of him actually, he researched it all himself and tracked down the cheapest and most reliable place to buy, he's more like his mom that way.

Other than minor games like civ i dont plan on using mbp as a gaming device, I think whoever buys it as a primary for gaming is doing something wrong. It will be for my college work.

@newfiejudd - I don't know how in the world a laptop would die from cosmetic chassis change.. There's something seriously wrong with the people that say it will harm your laptop. I can see how people might've given you gripe since the holes were a bit funky and not aligned correctly.

Though the sager is a good lappy(owner of np8130), its very bulky and unpleasant to the eyes. I have been eyeing on their 11 inch np6110, however, it looks kinda cramped.

I still wished there were some sort of third party that made the backplate, even is it wasn't the same materials used.

I guess I'll hold on til the WWDC.. with the hopes that they come up with a completely new chassis or a design for cooling?

Yes, no chance of damage but only the crap to flow in from the bottom. You should be fine if you live in a sterile environment, but even I get crap on my computer in my room when I am not even opening up my window these days.

Computers that have vents at the bottom like alienware also have a protected girl right above the vents.

you can buy replacement backing plates for about $150. Thats not cheap. But if you want to experiment, there you go :)

It is pretty easy to get screen mesh like you would use for a window, and cut it out and put it inside to cover the holes to keep lint out.
