I used the trial version for the freeware game, Hurrican----it didn't work.

(but then, they have no pretensions as to running *every single game*)

I use it to play Guild Wars. Works great. In fact it worked when Parallels wouldn't run the game.

crossover mac (or crossover games) is fine for the games it supports. obviously you will get the best performance, (and can play all games) by booting windows. but you can play half life 2 and source games using WINE with crossover. if you just didn't want to pay for windows, you might as well install linux and just use wine directly without having to pay for anything.

but if you are just annoyed at the prospect of rebooting, then crossover games is decent for half life 2 and other source games (like tf2 and portal) and is also decent at a few other games, like guild wars.
