I have a new Core i5 Macbook Pro and the magnetic latch is very strong. It almost seems abnormally strong. I can literally lift up the entire notebook a few inches off the ground before the screen finally comes up. I had a few people check it out and they said that their Macbook Pro hinge was not nearly as strong as mine.

Does anyone else have a really strong latch? It makes it difficult to get the screen open. Is there anything I can do about it?

Well it could be that it is new. Maybe once it wears in, it will loosen up?

If you find it unbearable and since your laptop is BRAND NEW...you can always go get it swapped.

You might want to check that cus I wouldn't want my shiny new macbook bangin against the ground every time I opened it. Thats why they make the latches loose so you can open it with out the bottom coming up.

On my new mbp it is very strong as well, I have no doubt it will loosen up with more time. Like most people i prefer it tighter then looser....

Yeah, that's what I was thinking...maybe I'll take it to the Apple store and have them take a look if I happen to have some free time. I haven't found anyone else with the current-gen Macbook Pro, but the Core2Duo gen has a significantly easier latch.

You don't need to find other people with the current gen. When you get to the Apple store check out their demos and see if they match up to yours. I just got a new 15" Core i5 and mine is strong too but I like it that way. First, it just adds to how good the build quality feels, IMO. And when carrying it around the office or sitting up vertically in my bag there's very little chance of the lid opening. You might want to look at it as more of a blessing than a curse. ;)

I noticed this too. I had to hold down the bottom of the slot while pulling up with my other hand. It may be because the hinge is tight and that this is providing excess friction. I'm just hoping that it loosens up over time.

They always loosen up over time. Just keep prying it open and it should loosen up in no time! :p ;)
