Hello folks,
I wanted to ask something
Since I'm most likely going to stay on OS X, I want to be able to play my movies and all the stuff on my Macbook and most likely I'm also going to hook up my TV to a ATV3.
I have a lot of stuff, like family video clips taken with camera. I want to convert these to mp4. I have tried VLC, but it is so much hassle if I want some of these on my iPhone or anything
So, my question is, what is the MAX specs (quality) I can convert my videos to in order to be able to play it on ATV3?
And, any software tips?
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Easiest is to use Handbrake. Not sure if they've updated to 1080 ATV3 settings yet, but 1080 conversion (regardless of software) can take a LONG time. You can create a 1080 setting in Handbrake without too much trouble, however.
Using 720p ATV2 default settings is another option, and this has much better conversion rates. -

Handbrake doesn't have a AppleTV 2 (2012) 1080p profile. The highest it will go with profiles is AppleTV 2 720p. They haven't updated it for the new iPad either as that can properly handle 1080p videos too (the iPad 2 could play them back but the display resolution wasn't near enough to take advantage of them).
However, it should be noted that transcoding settings should not be overkill. There is no need to convert a 480p video to anything other than 480p with a bitrate similar to that of the source content. You would be wasting space and resources if you took a 480p 1.5Mbps mpeg-2 video and encoded it to 5Mbps 720p/1080p since you will not be able to increase its quality.
Either way, I would stick with the AppleTV 2 profile in Handbrake. It makes things simple and, for the most part, 720p is fine even on 1080p sets. -
Thanks for the replies guys… It is actually everything from 240p to 1080p…
I've also actually looking for a windows software. I've forgot to mention that, my mistake, sorry. This way I can set up one of my laptops with my external drive to convert few days in a row so I can get it done.
Edit: I've have some sort of codec package installed, Perian?
I'm able to convert directly from Quicktime, I've tried this but it messes up the sound on some of my clips… -

Handbrake is a Windows and OS X program... Perian for QuickTime still isn't perfect and I can't get it to fully work half the time when it comes to converting videos.

Thank you. I'll set up one of my more powerful laptops which is not in currently use to convert the clips then…

Converting my clips...
