for a free converter I would have to say isquint. Its slow but it works. That companys highend video converter, Visualhub, does a lot more and does it quickly.

    +1 for iSquint

Slow but it does everything I need, you get control over the size of the video along with sound and audio quality, you also get to crop the video. Takes about 20-30mins for a 90min movie on my 2.4ghz Penryn.

Cool.. I guess I'll give iSquint a try.

Does it have a preset video size for the iPod Touch? Do you guys know what that is?
I'm assuming that iPod Touch native resolution would be the best resolution to choose from?

Im using WinAvi media converter, already converted about 100+ clips and movies! Its simple, quick + option to transfer directly to Ipod. Also there are some options like converting to PSP , same sized MP4 and something else.

There are a ton of converters, iSquint is a big one, there's also Videora and others. I'm sure they have presets already! Visual Hub costs money unfortunately, but I've heard does a great job.

Thanks for the reply. I'm getting a 2nd gen iPod Touch. Still waiting for it to come in the mail.

In the meantime, I downloaded iSquint and this Firefox plug-in called "video download helper". I tried it out with a video from YouTube that had the high quality option enabled.

The plugin downloaded a .flv movie that I played with VNC so I used iSquint to convert it to .mp4 but I noticed that the size of the movie became smaller. I couldn't find an option to export for iPod Touch.

by the way!! a good hint to download ipod-ready clips is to go to youtube, then for example look for 2pac-hit em up, i get the videos and click to any of them. I got a video with URL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4HjsZqOaQ0
then simply add "mp4" to it like this http://www.youtubemp4.com/watch?v=N4HjsZqOaQ0 You will get weird page, but there will be link like this on the top "N4HjsZqOaQ0" right click==> Save as==> you get Iphone ready mp4 video,

I tried out alot of windows ones a few years ago, always ran into issues, eg out of sync audio... having to guess the resolutions, and too many options.
On the mac side isquint was great, simple easy and it worked everytime, so well that I got visualhub (which is also very nice).... thus no need to go into boot camp, the best ipod converter is on OSx

VisualHub is no more, same with iSquint.
the company founder has moved on to other things.
