I went with Parallels a few months ago because I have a lot of data in windows-specific programs that I needed to be able to reference while working in OSX. But, I also have a couple of programs that need Direct-X and 3D capabilities.

Now that Parallels is rolling out the ability to boot from the Bootcamp partition within Parallels, it's the best of both worlds.

However, I can't find any information on switching a Parallels virtual machine to a Bootcamp partition. I can find info on switching from Bootcamp to Parallels, but I'd really like to go the other way...without reinstalling windows.

    Any ideas?

You can't. It's because Parallels creates a file on your HD which contains the virtual Windows partition, while Boot Camp cuts your drive into two seperate partitions. Your best option would be to re-install Windows in Boot Camp, then copy over all your files from your virtual partition to your Boot Camp partition.

    Yes, you can.

Get the new Parallels beta and you will be able to. HOWEVER! it is NOT easy to do and you have a chance of hosing the whole system. Go to the forums for Parallels and someone made a very detailed how to.

Be warned it is a fairly lengthy process. Backup all of your data!

My recommendation is to keep your parallels image, and just do a seperate bootcamp partition. Unless you need all the programs from your Parallels image that is, then you're between a rock and a hard place. Of course you could always get an external hard drive, put the parallels image on there, then get parallels for windows... Just a thought.

Or do I have that wrong with that Parallels reads the bootcamp image?

I have never heard of the ability to copy a Parallels Windows partition to a Boot Camp partition before. I only know that the opposite, copying of a Boot Camp partition to a Parallels virtual partition, was introduced in the new Beta.

Yeah, I might have gotten that backwards! I know parallels can read any partition (on or off the network) and make it into an image.

So yeah, maybe it can't make the partition out of the image. But why not? If you think about it, that should be something Parallels should try to do next. It seems like it wouldn't be TOO hard.
