    Hi

Recently got a macbook for the first time and I'm having trouble figuring out how to connect to the other (vista pc) computers on my network. Of course on vista I would just click network and it would show all devices online, but here nothing shows....

...so I've looked up walkthroughs and I have to go to GO/ connect to server, then punch in the computer name...ok....

but once I'm in, all I see on the pc I tested on is this "users" folder and nother else. I have virtually everything set to share....what am I doing wrong? Why can't I see the normal public/shared folders? Is there an easier way to connect to my home network computers?

The way I have it is that once I am in Connect to Server, type in smb://"IP address of the computer you want" and it should connect you.

    is it 10.5 leopard?

you don't have to use the connect option like that... (usually)

in System preferences under Sharing, click to enable file sharing and go in and set what you want to share on your Mac... make sure you hit the Options button, and disable AFP and FTP, and only use SMB (which is what Windows uses, if you don't select it like this, your Firewall may try to block SMB traffic)).

in Finder you should be able to go to your computer name and hit Network and browse all SMB networks, including Windows machines. This doesn't always work and I have no idea why. I have some XP and Vista machines that work, and 1 that doesn't, and they have identically set up settings... who knows with Windows... I can still get to it with connect to using smb://IPADDRESS/Sharename

If you dont see the Windows machine browsing, make sure the Windows machine is set up to share and doesn't have firewalls blocking....

you can only use Connect to to connect to things set up to be shared on Windows... and easiest to type the full location with share name...
