    Good day,

Just curious, how can I change the notebook's settings so when I close the lid it does not hibernate or sleep or whatnot? Is there a way to make it so it just turns off the screen and leaves everything else on?

    Thanks.

Hahaha, I've seen that before but for the iPhone. They have that if you jailbreak it.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot right now!!!

EDIT: Download link does not work. Google yields nearly no similar results...

2x EDIT: Thank you and thank you softpedia.

glad it worked out. many users here use insomniax to hook their laptop to an external display and work on it.

Ya hopefully Snow Leopard will have more power options like that, a Cut option, and the ability to pass word protect files and folder like you can in windows without having to make a protected .dmg image.

you can wake a computer back up with the top down.... but to keep it awake and close it, it does take 3rd party software right now (at least to do it easily)

I prefer running mine with the top up for better cooling though.... even when only using an external monitor

That is 100% false. Within Energy Saver Preferences you can keep the computer awake while the lid is down.

Go within System preferences (Energy Saver) There should be a check box that states puts Hard Disks to sleep when possible. Un checking this will keep the computer awake. While the lid is open or closed.

Also you need to tell the OS to not put the computer to sleep or turn the monitor off as well. Other then that, the computer will stay awake while the lid i closed until the battery dies.

However if it doesn't work which wouldn't surprise me then Try insomnia it should keep your computer awake while the lid is closed. The Macbook and the macbook Pros we have here in the lab are on all the time (Battery & Powered) and they tend to stay awake with the lid is closed. Not all of them but for what I have seen it tends to work. However I have heard reports of it sleeping or the disks turning off when the lid is closed. oh well.

doesn't work for me.. battery or plugged in... unless I have a monitor, mouse and keyboard also attached.. then it seems to... I still wouldn't run it this way, the way the vent is in the back, its blocked off more if its closed than a normal open position.

the OP didn't say why it needed to be closed, some people do it without a keyboard or mouse plugged in and it still goes to sleep.

Do you actually own a mac?? mac users have always had a problem in making the computer not go to sleep while the lid id closed. most if not all of them use 3rd party applications. Besides that, running it in clamshell mode reduces airflow which increases temps.

Do Macs not have a "When lid is closed: Do Nothing" option?

I use InsomniaX with my external monitor, and works fine for me. Just be sure you're computer doesn't overheat from the lid capturing the heat. ;)

I also think that it takes pressure off your GPU by only having to power one big screen as compared to the big screen and the notebook monitor itself.

Colton is correct. Running dual screens is more taxing on the GPU/CPU, and AirSinner is talking rubbish. There's no option to keep the system on when closing the lid. The only way to run in external-display mode (only one display), is to close the lid of your laptop, wait for it to sleep, and then wake it up with an external keyboard/mouse. You CAN use Insomniax, but I don't like it, as if my lid is down, I like my laptop display to be off, and also my keys not to be lit up. I realize you can turn the brightness of the screen down, and turn the keys off, but the screen is still ON, which is wasteful.

In any case, there are workarounds...

You can just turn off the keyboard light, and with insomniax you can just sleep the display

I just put mine to sleep putting the screen down (keyboard, mouse, monitor plugged in) and woke it up (via mouse).... then opened the screen back up, and it did NOT come back on... opened, completely off, only 1 monitor seen, the external. no third party software needed, opened up, and only the external monitor activated... so no extra drain on the video card running two.

just keep your lid open for better airflow and sleep the display or put the brightness level to none. no need for 3rd party apps.
