Hey everyone, I'm about a week into getting the MBP and I love it.....I do have two little pet peeve's (spelling?) and I dunno if it's fixable....

    (1) Is their any way to make the computer NOT go to sleep when you close the lid?

    (2) When you tell the computer to shutdown, but you close the lid before the hardrive and stuff turns off, will it go to sleep first and not shut down?
^It seemed like it did this once, I'm not 100% sure.

    Thanks.

What else would you want your computer to do when you close the lid? I'd think it'd be better off if your computer slept if you closed the lid...it saves energy.

And yes, if you don't wait long enough the MacBook Pro will go to sleep instead of shut down.

Try this to keep it awake. Not sure if it works with the lid closed or not.

Alternatively, if you plug in a USB device, that should keep your Mac from sleeping also.

Well, sometimes I leave AIM w/ away message open and when the computer sleeps it disables the internet connection....and likewise when I was bring my laptop somewhere, and I want the music to keep playing or the DVD to keep playing I dont want to have to carry it with the lid up.

Yeah I find the iChat disconnecting to be really annoying. I wish there was someway to keep it connected with an away up or something.

Why do you have to close the lid when you go away? Why not just leave it open and use Caffine?

Also, InsomniaX will let you close the lid and stop it from sleeping, but once again, why would you close the lid just to walk away from your computer?

This is a legit concern. Don't the Macs have a setting (like on a PC) that says: "When Lid is Closed, Do Nothing" ?

No, they don't unfortunately. InsomniaX was another I was thinking of but could not remember the name, thanks M@lew. One thing to note is to be careful doing this. You can generate a lot of heat and with the lid closed the notebook will not ventilate properly.

You can run your Macbook Pro or PowerBook in closed lid operation but that's only when you are connecting it to an external monitor. You have to get used to how the Mac OS works and understand that it really makes sense. Try not to compare what the Mac OS doesn't do that Windows does because that goes both ways. Many times I have went to Fry's and saw PC notebooks closed and still operating and the screen is still on. That makes no sense and the computers were blazing hot because of this.
Windows should be programed to turn off the screen automatically during closed lid operation but none of them did that.

I see your point, but if you have ever used a MBP you would know that one of the hottest parts is right above the function keys. I would not want my LCD directly over that for a long period of time, whether the screen is on or not.

I've also been looking for a solution to this feature....sometimes I have streaming downloads and need to move my macbook pro from one location to the next without it disconnecting from the wireless........it's pretty annoying/accident prone to walk around with it open. However it does get pretty hot and I wouldn't want it closed for an extended period to cook the lcd either =I

As far are using devices to keep it awake.....they usually don't, they simply wake it back up when it does go to sleep.

I second the suggestion of insomniax...but yes, I wouldnt do it if the cpu was blazing at 100% load...but for downloading things, or moving it short distances, i dont see that being much of a problem...
