Hi, I'm currently running OS 10.5.1 but have now decided I would like a clean re-install of the OS. I only have the upgrade only leopard disk and when I try to use it for a clean install it says it cannot be done because I have a more recent version installed. Does anyone know of a relatively simple way for me to do a clean install using the upgrade DVD?!

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but if you only have the upgrade disc, first you need to clean install tiger, and THEN use the leopard upgrade dvd to upgrade from tiger. You can't use a leopard upgrade dvd to clean install from leopard.

Hey, thanks for the reply and I think you're right.

Having investigated the problem with my mbp a bit further (see my "mail won't open!" post for details) I now think I'm experiencing a bigger problem that is affecting quite a few people here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=375608

I'm going to try re-installing 10.5.1 from the apple downloads page and hope that this helps things...not too confident though!

    try these:

    1. boot off the leopard CD and at the top where the menu bar is click on utilities and open disk utility. see if it will let you re-format the drive to journaled andthen install.

    2. go into disk utility under leopard and see if it will let you re-format.

I found this website which details how to convert that upgrade dvd back into a normal version.
    Hope it helps

Not true. You have to have Tiger installed, but then with the Leopard upgrade disc you can format/install a fresh Leopard when it finds your Tiger-or-above installation. So, yes it's an upgrade disc but it does let you install a fresh install.

Yeah, I don't know what the OP is talking about. I just tried this and had no problem. I am running 10.5.1 and placed my Leopard upgrade disc and started up the iMac holding down the "C" key. When it gets to the install screen a message comes up stating " You can't install OS X without changing my current settings".
All you have to do is click the Options button and the options available are Archive and Install and Erase and Install.
You can even go into Disk Utility on the install screen and erase from there.
No need for the retail version other than installing on an empty hard drive. If the upgrade disc sees Tiger you're good to go with any install options.
