I have a 2008 Aluminum Macbook that has been upgraded to 10.6.4 (I have this disc). I want to do a clean install but I lost the original installation disc. I have an install disc from a 2010 Aluminum Macbook Pro, can I use this disc to do the install?

I don't see what's stopping you from trying.

normally you can NOT use a OS disc from a different Mac.

but if you upgraded to 10.6 and you have that disc (like you said) then why don't you just use that? You can do clean installs from a retail 10.6 disc, its not some type of Windows 7 upgrade only type of thing. If your missing your iLife stuff afterwards... then worry about that problem later :)

You can use the 2010 disc in target mode install if you have a 2010 model around that you can loan.
    Otherwise any retail will work

I tried using my own 2010 MBP gray install disc on my GF's 2009 white Macbook and it said you cannot use this OSX disc to install or something along those lines.. so yeah. I guess cuz it was Pro to non pro?

cdcohen - I've seen you just post up images and nothing else.. what's the deal

You can use the apple gray disc in target mode:
Press and hold the T key on your GFs laptop on startup
once you have the firewire logo on her screen, hook up a firewire cable between her's and yours.
Now start yours on the Apple disc either pressing and holding the C key or via option mode.
Then just install onto her hard drive, it will show up as the firewire drive.
When done at reboot, disconnect the firewire cable and her's will have a fresh install from your gray apple disc

or pull her hard drive, install into yours, the target mode is far easier

Just to clarify, windows 7 upgrade discs and "full" discs are the same discs. It's the serial key on another piece of paper that is different.

I never meant the physical discs were different... but if you do a Windows 7 upgrade... it actually requires the qualifying product to be installed and working on the same drive, or it will not activate.

In the past Microsoft upgrades didn't require this, they let you search and use a disc from a previous version to show proof that you had owned it.

I just wanted to point it out because some people have used the new "everyone's a criminal" methods for Upgrades by MS, and might assume the OSX version they bought was this type of upgrade and had to install from the disc that came with the machine first.
