Is it worth it to buy a used MBP? Do people usually sell these with valid warranty coverage, and does that need to be transferred?
Or is the possibility of problems not worth the risk?
What's the cheapest way to get a newer MBP 13"? Can they be had refurbished or discounted?

The apple refurb store would be the first place to check
Mac ricondizionati - Apple Store (Italia)
Used can be a great way to purchase as well
The apple care is on the computer not the owner. -
I'd be careful of going any "unofficial" routes, such as eBay, and bear in mind that what you want carries a significant ownership value (in dollars) that isn't going to fluctuate much.
Also bear in mind that the 13" pro is only two revisions in, minor ones at that, so you're going to get good performance in any one you can find, but you'll pay a premium even for an older one as a result.
Macs in general have a strong resale value, so be wary of any "too good to be true" deals.
In addition to the refurb/outlet store above, I'd also check the "Pre-Owned/Used Macs" shop at PowerMax ( Mac Computers - Used Macs, Apple Refurbished Macs, Apple Computers | PowerMax) they even do trade-ins for older macs as part of a "trade up" program, and as a result, they've got some pretty good used wares... I've used them to go from a 2007 Santa Rosa MacBook to my current Pro 13 (bought new) and got a pretty good deal.
If you think you're going to save more than $200 (the extreme, in my opinion), then I think you might be in over your head wanting a Pro model.
Depending on your video needs, you can get into a nice Black or White Macbook with integrated graphics in the $500-700 range through various sources.
Good luck! -
Oh yeah - Another place to look, thats going to cut you a deal if you add a warranty: MegaMacs.com - Your source for Mega Mac Deals

Steal one. Ebay works well too. I bought my MBP 15 on there a few days ago. You have to be careful that it's not stolen or a scam, though.

I have bought several on Craigs List and only for really great deals.
You just have to know what to look for and check the ports before buying to make sure they work.
There is an Apple website where you can plug in the serial number and see the warranty status of any machine. If a seller won't tell you the serial number in advance,I move on. -
You guys missed one good resource.
That being this place. Notebook Review has its own selling forum right here, a the NBR marketplace. NBR Marketplace
I will be putting up the MB that is in my signature line in a few days, when I get around to taking some pictures.
