Did you download the drivers and the canoscan toolbox from Canon's website or are you using the included CD?

Are you connecting it to OS X or Windows?

I have a G5 desktop and the new Intel Alu iMac. I have the Lide 50 so it's essentially the same model as yours. Both the G5 and the iMac connect perfectly in OS X so in terms of the Intel Macs your scanner shouldn't have an issue with your MBP. Unless you are using the same cable to connect to your Windows machine and your MBP I would check the cable to be certain that it's not crimped or needs replacing. Also make sure you restart your MBP after installing the canoscan software, I think the software tells you to do that anyway.
