I'm formating my external hard drive with disk utility. I had 3 partitions in HFS+, NTFS, and FAT32. Those were all erased successfully. But for some reason in disk utility (DU), just below the external's icon, there's still the icon for the sparse image that I created to keep my important stuff encrypted. On Finder, the image is no longer there, but it is in DU and when I right click on name.sparseimage it and click on erase, it says cannot unmount image. When I click on the icon below it (name) and click erase, it says not sufficient privileges.

    ???

I should add that even when I turn off the external, the spargeimage.imagename and imagename are still there. I can't verify or repair them, erase them, or anything. And it says it's 10GB, so I definately want to erase it.

But it doesn't show up in finder ...

Have you tried re-partitioning your external using Disk Utility?

no... right now I'm erasing everything, the free space as well... it's a 2 hour process but hopefully it'll fix the issue.

If your 50GB was a Boot Camp partition previously, you can use the Boot Camp Assistant to merge it with your HFS+ Mac partition.

You should be able to restore your hard drive to a single partition with the Boot Camp Assistant as Budding suggested, Removing Windows from Your Computer.

If you're using Boot Camp Beta which has expired, follow these instructions: Boot Camp Beta: Removing a Windows partition after Boot Camp Beta has expired in Mac OS X 10.4.
