What kind of categorization are you interested in?

Under the "Mailbox" tab in the Menu Bar, you may select "New Mailbox", or "New Smart Mailbox" to create the folders into which you may organize your e-mails.

You'd see those folders on the left pane, which by default is visible----it lists your Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash, etc. folders. (Shift-Command-M hides/shows it)

The "Smart" mailbox does that automatically, based on the criteria you may set, e.g., as to sender, recipient, subject, etc. etc. (Smart mailboxes, however, catalogue e-mails that "physically" reside in the Inbox or Sent folders alone.)

What i was looking for is slightly different.
For eg : if i have mail folder for applications , i would like to mark them as accepted or rejected or inprocess mails and so on.... THis option is available in MS outlook. In this process, i can give different colours so that each category has its own colour.

EG: Mark all important mails in red colour

    Thanks for the answer.

My version of outlook went bad one day so I was forced to use outlook express. o2m doesn't work with express. I'll be going the Thunderbird route. Hopefully this will go off easy once I get my MBP!!
