I am planning on doing a clean install of windows 7 on my computer but when i do so is it possible that i can just sync my ipod to the empty itunes library and let it put all my ipod music on my computer? or will it ask me if it can erase all the data on the ipod and sync it to that itunes library.

never ever use an ipod/iphone to backup your music library!

best way to backup all your music is to copy the itunes folder: which contains your itunes library.lib and itunes media folder.

    REPEAT!
NEVER EVER use an ipod/iphone to backup anything be it music, videos or pictures. YOU WILL NEVER be able to get it off the ipod without some half-baked buggy third party software & you will be lucky if you find one that is free.

so after a fresh install of the OS, just download and install the latest itunes and replace the itunes folder created after installation with your backup.

    YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!!

absolutely correct. Getting your music off your ipod should only ever be a last resort option. Backup and copy across the itunes music folder as surefire suggested.

Many times over the years I've had to resort to third party software to pull music off of my iPod because I either forgot to backup my iTunes folder, the backup was bad, or my HD died. I've used both software I've purchased as well as free, both worked fine.

You just have to jailbreak you ipod? Then you ssh your songs out or just use an app that can do it.

PodtoPC is probably the easiest way, but I wholeheartedly agree with backing it up manually. Unless you really cannot afford it, buy an external hard drive a back it up!

Getting the songs off the ipod will get just the songs. All that database info that you've built up over the years, like album art, song play counts, ratings, playlists... there all gone if you don't backup your iTunes library.
To me those things are almost as important, as it takes a lot of work to get those back.

I'm a bit late on this one, but hopefully this will be of some use:

kennettnet.co.uk has a free ipod recovery programme that keeps all of the album art, song play counts etc. etc. I've used it and had no problems.

I'm sure there are others, evidently there's this thing called google which can help in times of crisis..... as Khris is keen to remind everyone.... or is it just me he's keen to remind

    use TuneAid, iPod2Computer, CopyTrans

they keep all the info the library will look exactly the same

rip the iPod to a folder, turn off "keep itunes organized" then import the whole folder

This is a bad idea if you don't have a back up, jailbreaking your iPod erases it.

Depends which method you use. Blackra1n doesn't require a full erase/restore where as Pwnage does.

Any of you download illigall music ? I ask because i hate music from itune, it can't be played by any other music player softwares. And I decided to download illegal music only so i can play it on Real-player and other platforms.

discussing illegal activities is against the forum rules...

iTunes music is standard audio files, if other players do not support it, its their problem. You can also always convert anything you've purchased to a different format easily, so i assume you are getting illegal music because you don't want to pay for it, and are rationalizing it by saying its for compatibility.

    Of course you did (Bollocks).

While doh123's conversion argument is Applezombie rubbish since there's loss in quality involved in the process, there's the Amazon MP3 Store just for starters. And (gasp) CD's which you can rip losslessly.

you assume a lot... I didn't feel like writing a novel, so sure i didn't give every option, only addressed what was already brought up.

You really like assuming people are rabid Apple lovers and cannot see anything bad in Apple... Your thought that there is so many people like this, and everything anyone says must be like this, is just as bad as the people who really do support Apple that way.

THANK YOU!!! I am so sick and tired of VogulTrolls continual negative posts. He/She never has anything positive to say, always assumes the worst, and never hesitates to spread the hate!
