You don't have to use Mac specified ram. That's just a gimmick so people buy overpriced ram from Apple.

Any ram brand will work for you as long as the specs are the same (ddr2 pc5300)

It's true, I thought it was ridiculous Apple charges $1,000 for 4GB of notebook RAM, where as you can buy 4GB on Newegg.com for $160

Yes, that would be an $840 difference for the same thing.

Apples reason: Apple RAM doesn't void the warranty....

neither does replacing the RAM yourself....

I've read the RAM Apple fits into its notebooks are Buffered and that would justify the price increase (although it probably doesn't justify such a steep increase...).
Anyway, I was thinking of starting a thread asking about Buffered vs. Unbuffered RAM. Might as well cyber-jack this one :p. What's the difference performance wise?

The difference is that buffered RAM is better suited for very large files.

Here is a pretty good explanation.

I agree, Apple overprices its RAM, much cheaper to get it from places such as Newegg.

And yes, upgrading RAM on any Mac does not void the warranty...
