How can I make it so that every time I close the lid, the computer doesn' t sleep but instead is still active, the screen is just off?

Change the settings in the Configuration panel, I think....Or, at least, thats what seems logical to me. EDIT: I don't have an Apple laptop, so I don't really know. It sounds like you need to use insomniaX, based on the posts above and below mine.

If you're in Windows, go to the Power Options page of the Control Panel and change the settings of the power plans there.

In windows do what redline told you to do. In OSX get insomniaX and the computer will stay on, even when lid is shut. Or if you have an external monitor hooked up with an external keyboard or mouse, the computer shouldn't turn off when you close the lid.

Another usefully trick is to enable bluetooth to wake the computer, so if you have a bluetooth mouse or keyboard, then they can wake the computer when the lid is closed using either of those devices.
