Is it normal for CPU temperature to be at 65-70 when having only adium, safari, firefox open? It starts off at 50-55. Then all of sudden I look and it's 70.

I idle at around 50C and I only reach 70 when gaming. So, no, I wouldn't call that normal.

I once played a game of chess and my CPU temp reached the 70 (the fan kicked in and I was in a meeting :p!) -- that's the only instance my temp raised without doing any gaming. (Well, Chess doesn't count as a computer game.)

How hot does it get when you start using CPU intensive programs?

When you watch something on YouTube it'll drive the CPU temperature up 5-10 C, so did you watch a YouTube video or go to a website with heavy Flash integration?

Anyways, 70 C isn't too bad as long as it goes back down to 60 C after a few minutes.

I wouldn't call it normal either. Unless it's a really really hot day, even on default, my MBP doesn't go up to 70 unless I'm doing something fairly heavy.

It used to idle around 45-50 all the time though (usually more towards 50). These days, with a cooler and fans at 3k, it idles at 40-45.

Incidentally, why do you have both firefox and safari open? :p

What are some acceptable temperatures for a Macbook running at full throttle?

What do you consider full throttle?

Anyways, for normal tasks I get about 50 C. If I continue to do these normal tasks for a few hours it goes to about 60 C. If I watch a YouTube video it jumps to 70 C. If I'm importing large photos it goes to 80 C.

Ask yourself this after using the MB on your lap for a few hours:

    1. Does your lap looked like charred hairless bacon?

    2. Do you have serious doubts about your ability to procreate?

If the answer to any of the above is "yes", it's too hot.

Full throttle is equivalent to greater than 75% total cpu usage, so maxing out one core and using more than 50% on the other. I have seen it get to 85 C, but only for a few minutes. Is this going to permanently damage the computer?

Luckily I did not have it on my lap, but on a notebook cooler instead.

85 degrees certainly wont damage the computer in any way.

85 C is okay. Its very hot, but its not going to damage the laptop components. The Core 2 Duos can withstand over 100 C in temperature, so its fine.

Wow, I am converting a movie for the ipod and alone, the temperature reached 80 C. I am starting to feel there is something wrong. Even with the fan at max (6000 rpm) the temperature is constantly at 65.

No, its okay, vaio_boi. You're overreacting! Its because you're converting a movie, and that works the processor, and it increases the temperature! Its okay!
