Hey i have a few questions regarding the warranty, and also how safe it is to buy a macbook pro off of kijiji.

So i have one person that is a "wholesaler" or macbooks, so he claims. They are Brand New in Box, for $1600. The other person got a macbook pro as a "birthday present", but already has an iMac. So she is selling it for $1600.

My question is, if i buy either, is it a safe purchase? Like will i be getting a legit apple macbook pro?

Also, if i buy the macbook, and there is not receipt and down the road something happens, can i still get it repaired without a receipt? What are apple's policy on that?

I can save a lot buying it from these people, rather than spending 2 grand in store. What should i do? I don't want to get screwed over, and end up wasting $1500 on something that will collect dust.

Get the Serial Number and call Apple and ask them.
I have done this several times.
If it is within the warranty period they will know and will cover it,it is the machine that has the warranty not the owner.

Okay awesome. I read online that people go there, and check online through this site - https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

That will work exactly the same right?

So if it has warranty, then i am 100% okay. No matter what apple will cover it by me just bringing it back to their store?

Generally, you don't need the receipt. The warranty goes with the computer, not the person. So as long as it is a real Mac and under warranty you will be cool. Personally, I would only buy from someone I did not know on Ebay (where you get insurance against fraud), and only buy from a seller who is highly rated. I bought my MBP on Ebay. No warranty issues so far, but I did check in with Apple, they switched the registration over to me, no worries. Also, think about buying from someone who got an extended warranty. Still fewer worries.

I think when you take it into the Apple store it automatically figures out when the MBP was purchased from Apple based on hardware information and your warranty is based on that.

I bought my MBP from the online Apple store and they did a little scan to check the computer and the date I bought it on popped up.

Diver110 - By fewer worries what do you mean?

What sort of problem will i run into if i bought the machine with just standard 1 year apple warranty?

The only problems you will run into are if you encounter a problem after 1 year. The service is exactly the same.

You just save money on the extended Apple Care because it costs $250 or $350 depending on your computer but when you resell it the value it adds to the computer in terms of difference in purchase price is like $100 to $150 (just a random guess) or less. This is just how buying used works. If you buy a car new a nav system costs like $2K extra but 3 years down the road you'll get $500 more in added resale value from it.

I've heard the opposite. Usually, you have to transfer AppleCare to the buyer after a sale. This may just be for AC, and not the standard year warranty. This is what AppleCare phone support told me.

Isn't there an ongoing scam where the seller can return the warranty for a pro-rated refund, screwing the buyer up to $260 (depending on what was left)?

Thats only if i got the applecare with it though, not standard warranty?

I would much rather just buy a straight up machine, that i know has the 1 year standard warranty, then purchase applecare myself around 10 or so months into the warranty.

That would save me a lot of hassle, although sure it would be more money, but i'm saving a lot buying it from this guy.

Is it possible to buy apple care outside of the 1 year warranty, I may be buying a 2010 mbp 17inch but it would be out of warranty by a few months?

Not really they are kind of strict about that. Maybe if it was a few weeks out of warranty. Even then technically it has to be one year.

Once registered, isn't the Apple Care tied to the serial on the computer?

The apple care stays on the computer serial not the owner from what I was told but I would try to see if they would switch owner just to be safe.
