Someone responded to my post, wanting to buy a new or used unibody macbook.

Im definitely getting a good price, but my only concern is that there is no receipt.. Seller said it was a gift (but im not quite sure about that)

Im definitely going to buy apple care, but do i need the original receipt for warranty purposes?? Or is it fine?

Need help asap! thank guys and gals

First off, be very wary about Craigslist deals. It's a very dangerous place to do business, many many many scammers out there. The whole no-receipt things raises some red flags. You won't be able to use the standard warranty, and I'm unsure if you can add on additional warranty.

How much are you saving versus buying brand new in a store? If it worth the risk for the extra savings?

I think you still can check the service tags for warranty.
the services tag is located on the chasis where the battery is.

How good a price exactly? No receipt... it might be stolen.

Like xenon, I'm very wary of craigslist for buying computer stuff.

Why not? When I had the bottom casing replaced on my old MacBook Pro, they didn't ask to see a receipt. They just checked the serial number to determine if it was still under warranty.

And to the OP: Yes, there is danger involved with dealing on craigslist, but then again, there's danger involved when dealing with any person you don't know, especially for something of such high value. :) However, I did buy my previous MacBook Pro from a guy off of craigslist (without receipt), and never had any trouble. So, there's no guarantee that you'll run into any problems.

HOWEVER, as swarmer said, it would be great if you could tell us the exact price, as that's sometimes one of the easiest ways to spot a scam.

I suppose it depends where you want to get your Macbook serviced. My local Apple servicing center here will not perform any repairs without proof of purchase.

then again it might not be stolen. did they tell you how they got the gift: company, friends or family? their response could give you more insight if they are lying or not. I know gifts I won from my old companies never came with a receipt.

with craigslist, if you are careful you can't prevent yourself from getting duped. does it come with everything: ac cord, cables, manual, DVDs & box?

I have bought many laptops, electronics & computer parts from CL and i would recommend that site to anyone and I always tell them to take precautions and be careful. I bought my current MBP from CL.
