    Hi to all,
I was wondering, can I just go to an Apple Store (authorized / BestBuy / etc.) and buy a MBP? I'm interested in the lower model, the $2,000 one. Or will it be hard to find since I hear that delivery from online orders are taking as much as 5 weeks?
I'm from outside the US, so in order to buy online I have to do a couple of money transfers, which will result in a higher final cost; in the end however, I'll be arriving in the US and able to purchase the notebook personally...

    Any opinions?

    Regards

EDIT: forgot to add, will I be able to get a student discount at a store?

You can just go into a store and buy your MBP. Try to find out which store is closest to where you are staying. I'm pretty sure they would have the 2.2ghz in stock. You can actually email the store too if you have any questions. Go online and get the store info...

Regarding your student discount, will you be going to school here in the US? I'm not sure if the student discount applies to overseas students. But in case you are eligible, just bring your ID and I'm pretty sure they'll give you the discount. If you buy your Mac by Sept., you get a free Ipod too… but that's through mail-in rebate… hmmmm wonder how that will work…

Yes, I will be attending Georgia Tech in Atlanta, so no problem with the student ID or mail in rebate :)

I guess the online method is best for those that live kind of far away from an Apple Store... right? Otherwise I see no big gains, or am I missing something? (besides no paying taxes if shipping to a another state)

Yeah, there's no specific benefit to ordering online, unless you want to do a custom configured order. If you live near an Apple Store there's not really a good reason not to buy from the store.

Ordering from some of these stores are actually an advantage, not only do you get the 1 year apple warranty, but some places offer warranties in the store, so no worrying about having to sending it off!

one more suggestion, since you'll be going to georgia tech, try to contact your school bookstore. They might have a better deal on their macs... it wont hurt to try...

Well, I used the GaTech "online store", which I can enter by going to www.apple.com/education/store and right before taxes I was quoted around 160 in taxes and the prices for the 2.2 was the usual 1,799 for student, so nothing great about it besides the usual Apple discounts.

I'll try the local bookstore and see what happens.

    10-q all!
