How do I tell when a Macbook or Macbook Pro was build. Going to the Apple Store today and I want to get the newest build I can get. Can I tell with out opening the box?

You can look at the serial without opening the box.

The Serial will start like this for the MacBook Pro: W86xx, where the two x's represent the build week.

For the MacBook: 4H6xx, where the x's also represent the build week.

Sorry, I don't know what the corresponding week numbers are, but you're pretty likely to get a recently built MB or MBP anyway.

The surefire way to know that you're getting something built very recently would be to wait until they put the Merom in the MBP, and then you would be pretty much guaranteed to know you were getting the most recently built MBP.

Either way, I wouldn't get too hung up on it. I mean, I know some people have been obsessed about build weeks in terms of getting a MB or MBP without some of the problems of earlier ones, but most of the laptops that are actually stocked right now would have later build dates anyway (I mean, you're not going to end up with a Week 2 MB or MBP right now).

Considering that the MB's have been selling very well, it's very likely that whatever you buy right now will be a recent build (that is, there's no reason they'd have a bunch of old MB's lying around unsold at this point).

Even a recent build is no guarantee of not having problems, so the main thing would be to just make sure you have some ability to get it taken care of if there is a problem.

The White Macbook is perfect for college needs, in my opinion the MBP for college needs is a bit excessive, as its geared towards professionals in the job field, from my experience most who get the MBP only get it for the GPU so they can play games on it.

I have the one your neice is looking at, and it's wonderful notebook, best one I have had yet, it feels very solid and its thin and small for carrying around.

personally the 5.2 lbs weight is NOT that much, there's a reason why there are bags out there, just make sure she has a backpack type that can carry notebooks, they are much better and easier to carry around, and more discret, yeah Apple designs them to show off style, but you don't need to show off a laptop case where some potential theft knows exactly what it is.

Take your time looking at, I know you'll like it, but theres no need to rush. :)
