I turned on my brand new Macbook and did a software update, which prompted me to restart my computer. After restarting, it goes to the screen with the apple logo and the small ticking icon beneath. After hanging at that screen for several hours, I had to do a hard power-off by pressing and holding the power button down.

I tried to power on again and let it be for a few more hours but it still hangs with the ticking icon beneath the apple.

Can anyone shed some light on what could be going on here?

Have you tried doing a firmware reset? I can't remember the key combination, it's pretty easy to find on apple support. If that doesn't work, the apple repair centre is the next stop.

Possible solution, boot from the install disk and with the Disk Utility do a permission repair, that will solve the issue in most cases. If you did the install with our a previous permission repair you will have fall in some missing permission on key Kext and do not boot properly

You might want to re-install everything. I upgraded to 10.5.2 back when it first came out and it crashed my system. Not something I recommend.
