What is required to make a bootable cd/dvd? I want to be able to boot off of a disk so I can image my MBP HD to my NAS server. My MBP is running Snow. Will need network active. I don't see disk utility working over a network. May have to find a digital dolly version that will work with the OSX.
or do I have to use a USB HD and time machine or disk utility.

I'd reccomend CarbonCopyCloner. It will make a clone of your harddrive that is bootable.
Though Im not really sure what you're trying to do. Are you just wanting to make an image of your drive, that you can boot from later? And you want to do it over network? It sounds like you want to boot from a cd, then backup your mac to a nas. CCC seems like a better choice since you dont have to boot into a dvd, just do it in os.
CCC works best with a usb hdd, but it looks like it has network functionality. Haven't used it, or looked into it to know what it does. -

Thanks for the response.
In order to make a full image backup of a HD you can not boot from the drive being cloned. This is why I was wanting to make a bootable disk with the apporiate utilities. I have over 2T of NAS storage (on gige) and would prefer to use it over a slow usb HD. USB drives can walk and fail. I prefer my RAID5 storage units.
I will take a look at CarbonCopy, I use to use that utility years a go before OSX. -
Havent tried it in the way you're talking, but I've got a Firewire 800 drive that I boot from and it works GREAT.

I really want network support for my backup. It looks like CCC only supports directly attached drives, the same as time machine. CCC does give you more options than TM though.

Yea, using CCC you can make a clone that you can boot off of.
As for network support, I know it has something, but not sure too much. -

I got CCC to send the image to my NAS. Had to make a disk image with the hfs file system for it to reconize it. Took just over 1:10 to backup 66gig. By my calculations the limit was the HD speed on my MBP.

Have you considered Superduper? Free is not always best.
