Just bought a macbook, installed xp. Everything is perfect, but not so perfect. The hard disk spins fiercely or is that the fan? The notebook vibrates badly both in xp and leopard. Another problem is even when the notebook is muted it will make a sound on startup. Help will be really appreciated.

Its probably the fan that's making the noise...but its a little awkward that you say your MacBook is actually vibrating...that's scary . As for the startup sound, that's normal (pressing the Mute key on the keyboard won't mute it at startup). I believe if you actually turn the volume all the way down using Volume Down, then it won't make a sound. I haven't shut down in a while, so I forgot :p.

What kind of sound does it make at startup? And how bad is the vibration? Like cell phone vibration bad? Where do you put your notebook?

Thanks guys. The startup sound should be gone. I just lowered the sound all the way down instead of mute and we'll see what happens. As for the vibration, it is a little buzz to the touch on the right that wasn't there before I installed xp. It is really annoying with no sound by vibration on the arm rest.

I think that is pretty normal, you should be fine. Does it happen with osx as well?

Yes it does. But it wasn't the case before I put installed xp. I mean I can feel the buzz in my hand. It is not just sound.

Is the disk drive being accessed when you feel the vibrations? I know DVD drives (like the on in my Inspiron) can make quite a noticable shake.

It is not as bad as a disk drive being accessed. There is no sound, just a buzz when I rest my hands on the keyboard. You know when you have an ac or any appliance running and you place your hand on it? You feel a buzz with no sound. Really annoying.

maybe try taking the disk out of the optical drive? It might just be spinning indecently when you dont need it in there ;)

I think I feel it too on my Macbook (very minimally if even, it could my imagination). It has a 7200 RPM drive inside of it though.

I think it's normal, it's either the HD making the vibration (and trust me, they vibrate alot, if you have an external 2.5" HD, you can feel it easily).

I expected a lot from apple since it is my first and I paid a premium. Comparing it to my faster spinning dv6500t (which has no vibration, not even a slight one) to the macbook. I will go to the store and checkout the ones on display. If they do the same this notebook is going back for good, and if they don't I'm swapping it for a new one.

This apple switch has not been good to me so far!

My MacBook has a 5400 RPM drive, and I never feel it vibrate at all...

Mine definitely vibrates. It's mostly on the right palm rest (on top of the HD), so it makes sense to me, and I don't notice it during normal use.

What's funny is that I didn't have the problem before installing XP. I used NTFS to partition since I wanted to cut my HD in half. Hmmm. I will go to the store and test the ones on display and see if they feel the same. I'll try to go today and let you guys know.

Just came back from the Apple Store, and guess what? I tested the MBs on display and they don't vibrate like mine. I think it has to do with boot camp/xp install. Hmmm. I'm calling Apple.

Case almost solved! Turned out that the HD was loose. They ordered a new one.
