I have read a few dissatisfied owners complaining about trackball becoming useless after a couple of months.

Is it really that bad and does the cleaning method that Apple suggest really work for this mouse?

x( unfortunately, yes. The trackball is great to use, when it's not stuck.
Apple's method works, but I find that if you have a STACK of paper, it works pretty well. Also, I've seen someone who's taken a peice of tape, exacto-knifed it so it fit into the ball area, and then actually roll the the tape into it. That works quite well. More details on how to do that Here

But yes, mine gets stuck frequently.

Just to clarify, the response of the mouse is great, and it works very well!
My trackball just gets stuck a lot. :(

Some people say to stick the entire mouse into distilled water and roll the ball around, take it out and let it air dry for at least 3 days. They say it works great. (Distilled water doesn't conduct electricity)

All I do to unstick the trackball is hold the Mighty Mouse (MM) upside down then firmly rub the ball with my thumb. It works, but the trackball does get stuck relatively frequently. However, this is only the beginning. Next, the MM is relatively expensive. Also, the MM is not ideal for gaming. You cannot simultaneously right-click and left-click. BOO!!!

There are better Bluetooth Mice options available:

    Microsoft Bluetooth® Notebook Mouse 5000

Logitech V470 Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks

    Razer Pro Click Mobile Mouse

Search the Accessories Forum for more reviews. Just be sure to check for OS X compatibility.

My brother has the wired version and his trackball is stuck. Honestly, the Mighty Mouse might be an Apple product to skip.

how long has he owned it? I happen to love the mouse, the wired version in particular, because it is extremely light, and the track ball has worked flawlessly for me.

I am usually using a tablet, but I still like using a mouse for many things still.

I would love it if they could make a wireless version of this mouse that was just as lightweight as the wired version, but having a wired version doesn't really get in my way at all, or take up any extra ports, as I also use apple's keyboard.

pc world has to have some form of article, all mice back then were pieces of **** as far as I am concerned, that one worked just as awkwardly well as all the others.

but like the others have said, if i was buying a bluetooth mouse, which I probably wouldn't, I would probably look for a different one, simply due to the weight of the mouse, but that is just personal preference, as your choice should be.

I've gone through two, but I still love it. No problems with my new one. I've read that Apple has "fixed" the trackball problem or at least improved it. Seems to have worked. It's only gotten stuck once and a little dig with a pin got the big chunk of dirt right out. No problems ever since.

I have done more research since posting this thread and I cant believe the collection of methods out there to try to fix this problem but the distill water bit tops it.

I really like the scroll ball instead of the click wheel. So far, it is either Apple's Mighty or the Kensington Slimblade. Both are expensive but the slimblade's ball isnt rubber, so maybe that one will be better.

I personally haven't tried the distilled water, but last night I finally decided to open up my mightymouse, and boy there was a LOT of gunk stuck inside the trackball. I cleaned it up, and now it works like the first day I bought it. :)

I've heard nothing but problems with the Mighy Mouse, which is why I'm staying the hell away from it. You should NOT have to fix a trackball problem, since it should NOT be getting stuck, and the fact that it's so common is unacceptable. For the same price you can get a kick ass, more reliable mouse from Razer.

I usually rub the trackball on the mighty mouse with a A4 paper.
