I was just curious if anyone knew a program that played blu-ray at 1080 resolution? (On an iMac 24'')

Not gonna happen on OS X. You'll need to install Windows and either WinDVD or PowerDVD.

Whether the chipset needs HDCP certification (and HDCP certified drivers) depends on how the system was designed. Laptops with GPUs that can run blu-ray and HD-DVD can do so without HDCP certified drivers, so long as the connected display is used. They'll need HDCP certificatied drivers and display if an external display is used.

Oh, and Windows in Parallels or Fusion won't cut it. You'll need to install it via BootCamp.

I'm definitely missing something here, the blu-ray movies are internally h.264 and there are h.264 decoders for os x, so what's the problem?

DRM. Plus there is a lot more than just the encoder that goes into it.
