I am in need of a second note book...I already have the MBP 2.4 but I need a second more portable option for general email ,web, itunes ect. I am looking at either a MBA 1.8 w/SSD or the BLK Macbook. Having the pro I really like the LED screen and the Backlit keyboard and always wanted a notebook with ssd. I do not use my disk drive that much that I would miss it. Would the MBA 1.8 SSD keep up or would there be lots of lag?

Well we haven't seen the SSD Air in action as of yet but I have seen other notebooks with the SSD and they were quite speedy in start up times and app launching.
I'm ordering the SSD Air to complement my iMac. I played with it at Macworld and it was awesome and surprisingly the many hours it was running it was very very very cool to the touch. I played an iMovie test movie and didn't warm up very much at all. That model however was the $1799, there were no SSD's displayed at Macworld.

It would definitely keep up...the 1.8 GHz is fast. I don't know if you'd be willing to spend $3000 on a "secondary" notebook though...unless you really like its features/weight/thinness/all-of-the-above. Personally, I would just get a black MacBook and use the extra money saved on extras :).

SSD is much faster than standard hard drives. Coupled with 2GB RAM and an X3100 speed won't be an issue. As for the CD drive, you can always just wirelessly use the drive in your MBP through the MBA when you need it.

I guess the main deciding factor here is how much money you have laying around. If you are willing the spend that much on the MBA, I don't see why not.

hldan.. Thanks the heat was also on my mind. Good to here it's not like my MBP.
sam.. Thanks I am wanting something smaller than the MB but just as fast. The standard drive that comes with the MBA would be a "weak link" I would think.

Agree 3000+ is a lot to spend but I have no other guilty pleasures and have the cash

Yeah, the 1.8-inch hard drive would be annoying...and since you want something smaller, and don't mind spending, then go for it!

When you held it ...does it feel sturdy? It seems that something that thin might be flimsy.

I'm waiting (hoping) the <noparse>MacBook</noparse> gets an LED update soon. And to see the Air in-store. Don't pre-order, that's silly (unless you were at Macworld and got a real good look). ;)

I'd say the OP wants an Asus EEE with a 16GB SDHC card.

Oh right, pre-ordering may not be the best idea. Remember how the Macbook and Macbook Pro were rolling in defects and bugs? Well, it's a possibility with the MBA too. I'd wait to see how the first month plays out before committing.

i don't think i would pre-order as well, keep in mind that SSD prices are dropping more and more as well, it may be quite a while before we see a larger SSD in the MB Air for the exact same price or less, but if you want a new machine right now it definitely shouldn't stop you.

especially since it is meant for total portability, having a large HDD really isn't that important.

Lets hope that SSD prices come down as the present 128Gb (SATA 2.5") fm Memoright is listed at $3300 at DVNation.

Sam suddenly forgets that he's a Mod, and turns all fanboy-ish on us. ;)

But really, congrats! And like Sam already said, take photos! :)
