I know, I know ..... Apple! However, several e-tailers (Amazon and MacMall) offer modest discounts on the Mac Book, but don't allow much in the way of customization , esp. the annoyingly inadequate 2 x 256 MB stock RAM. Then, several posts have mentioned better service esp. if one needs to return a defective Mac book if it is purchased from an Apple store.

Has anyone used another vendor they would recommend?

Given the high cost of customizing the upgraded RAM with Apple (plus the fact that a custom config can be harder to return if you need to), I wouldn't say that it is a negative that you can't customize when you buy through Amazon. I would say Amazon is probably a pretty good place to buy from, when you factor in their mail-in rebates plus no tax (you won't get a rebate buying directly from Apple, and might have to pay tax).

You can take a MacBook to an Apple Store for service regardless of where you bought it, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I'd say go ahead and buy from Amazon, and use the money saved to buy a 2GB RAM kit.

I don't think Apple really cares or even knows where you bought it from. It is not like the AppleCare guy pulls up your serial number and the screen starts flashing Amazon or something.

If you get a defective unit it's much easier to take the machine back for an exchange if you bought it at a brick and mortar store.
