"Best" and "Cheapest" can rarely be used successfully in the same sentence. ;)

Most places sell Macs at the same price that Apple advertises them on their website. Apple isn't like Dell who constantly has "coupons" for either dollar amounts or percentage amounts off the purchase price. I think the only real discounts that Apple offers is the education discount (which isn't what it used to be).

You want a Mac, be prepared to pay for it. (It's money well spent however!)

Your stated need means you're having to purchase from other online retailers in the distribution channel, i.e. NewEgg, Amazon, etc.

The problem is that given your timeline (10/29) it is unlikely that anyone outside of Apple is going to have the new MB/MBP's in stock before the end of this week. They'll eventually trickle out to the other resellers, but this is a brand new product launch and Apple is likely to keep the available stock for direct shipping to their b&m stores or online orders until the next couple of ships come over from China with the next set of product....

Edit - OK, I take it all back. $1599 version of MB on Amazon for $1594, supposedly in stock and shipping. Link here.
    $1299 version still at pre-order.

Most resellers sell at the same price as Apple. Some Brick-And-Mortar stores like Future Shop in Canada and Best Buy do sometimes have $50, 100 sales, and as ClearSkies noted, sometimes Amazon is a bit cheaper. But generally its the same price, and as for customer service goes, I can say no one beats the Apple Stores.

I suggest you purchase in Oregon for no sales tax :D.

I was thinking the same thing. But if you had to drive up here, or had somebody buy it and ship it, you wouldn't save all that much.

Some states allow you to claim the tax exemption with an Oregon drivers license number though. (Washington state is one such state). However I'm not sure if you can have it shipped to another state with that method...

    Apple. no connivance no contrivance.

you are going to have to travel to another state if you don't want to pay tax.

and I highly recommend not purchasing a MBP unless you can afford AppleCare to go with it.

    Macmall.com

Their prices are lower than Apple's website.
Macmall prices are about the same as the educational discounts that Apple gives. But, another big bonus to Macmall is that they throw in a few extras like free printers, cases, or VMware or Parallels software that lets you run the Mac OS and Windows OS at the same time.

As far as tax, unless you have a "tax number", allowing you to purchase without out, then there is not way not to get taxed.
If a business has a retail outfit in your state, and your state charges tax for products, then even if you buy from an online retailer, then you'll still get taxed.

What I like about Apple is that, what you buy is what it's worth...one year from now your laptop would be sold on the web for the same price or at greater student discount...the products' value do not depreciate as much...so when time pass by.....they will refresh the specs but still keeps it in the same price
