I WILL be buying an MBP (as this whole forum already knows ;) ) and now I need a keyboard cover. It breaks my heart when people pull out their two-month old MBPs and they have those nasty grease stains on all the keys - especially the spacebar. It's depressing. :( Anyway, which is the best keyboard cover? I know iSkin but there have been some negative reviews. The Moshi Clearguard is an alternative. I just need something that fits really well. I tried typing on my friend's keyboard cover from... ACCStation I think? It felt really nice, but I'm not sure exactly where he bought it.

Skin oils are easy enough to clean off. Better to periodically clean the keyboard than to have a keyboard skin that looks ugly and out of place from the first day.

It's a different situation if there are kids around (I use keyboard skins at home to prevent apple juice spills inside the machine), but when it's just me, I use no keyboard skin and just clean the keys from time to time. The typing feel is more natural too.

Oh, really? So you can clean the grease off your keys with, say, LCD cleaner? Because I heard that the keys themselves actually get all worn and smooth and get permanently damaged.

I turn the computer off and use a cloth with a bit of rubbing alcohol on it. Takes the skin oils right off.

I suppose it's possible that you could wear the matte surface clean off the keys...but most of the time, the shininess on a keyboard is heavy accumulation of skin oil, not damage to the keys.

How often do you do this? And you have the black keyboard MBP, right?

Black keyboard on both my MBP and Vaio. I do this whenever the shininess is noticeable. Once every couple weeks, more often if I've been using hand cream.

Okay, well, thanks then. Guess I don't need the keyboard cover.

I still use one of the clear silicon ones most of the time - but more for protection against accidental damage from liquids. After a friend's cat knocked his cup of coffee onto his keyboard is seemed like a good idea....

I use a ShaggyMac screen protector (microfiber cloth) that sits nicely on the keyboard when you close the screen. Also can be used to wipe the screen.

I've got one for the MBP, but I find it makes the keyboard feel muddy and decreases my typing speed and accuracy. I'm also suspicious that it interferes with the cooling system (isn't the keyboard one of the air intakes for cooling?). I only use it when my kids are around the machine; it's not doing anything CPU-intensive or GPU-intensive then anyway.
