I am looking for a good protective case (but not a backpack) for my 17" macbook pro. I did a search, but came up mostly with irrelevant threads. Can someone give me some advice? Thanks.

Someone just asked this same question, and 90% of the responses(including mine) said that Speck cases are the best. I have a speck case and its awesome. They're around $45 on ebay.

The Speck cases only work with the Unibody Macbook Pro 17.

I would go with a Zagg InvisibileSHIELD. Allows the industrial design of mbp to shine because it does not increase the footprint one bit. Then just buy any sleeve that suits you and call it a day.

There are hardcases, made by speck and incase. They add weight, and make it a bit bigger. But also offer a colour change, and really good protection all the time.

incase also makes neoprene sleeves, which a lot of people like. But only protects it when its in the sleeve.

invisibleshields iirc are a plastic sheet that you stick onto you mbp, which protects it from light scratches, but not any hard hits. theyre the lightest, and ones you wont notice.

I would think a hard case would not protect it against shocks, unless the hardcase itself was padded, no?

Hardcases protect against shocks by being the thing that gets hit and not the laptop itself.
Its just a hard physical layer that will take damage instead of you laptop.

I just scored a 17" myself and am trying to decide on a case.

I have had great luck with the Bihn Brain Cell with every other machine I have tried.
They have rigid board on the sides and a neoprene sling elevated from the bottom so the machine survives banging and drops without incident....hopefully.

I ordered one and am waiting for it.

I have my 13" MBP in a Radtech Mac Truck which makes it much like a ToughBook but is expensive, heavy and bulky.
When I have flown with the combo I get strange looks from the TSA which makes it better for me.

I may go that route too as the machine is well protected inside one.

No substitute for the Toughbook which I always carry next to a Macbook but Commando without anything else.
