Hmm...what's the average battery life of the XPS M1330? The MBP is usually around 3-5 hours.

I assume you're looking at the M1330 with dedicated graphics?

Battery life is given assuming a 6-cell, 56WHr battery with the webcam disabled. The 9-cell battery provides 51% more power than the 6-cell, so you can safely multiply the battery life by 1.5 to get the time for the extended battery.

And the MBP is 3-5 hours doing normal things? How about watching a DVD movie?

I think that the battery life is pretty much similar. I own a XPS M1330 now and i can get about 3.30 web browsing, using IM, word processing and with my bluetooth of on power saving mode 5/8 and with nothing else disabled with a 6 cell battery.
I would get longer than this if i disabled wifi/was not connected to internet I probably would get over 4 hours.

I have also owned a MBP and i got about the same battery life web surfing etc.
DVD's etc were not to great and it was under 3 hours for sure for me.

Well, for me, wifi, no bluetooth, not caring about how high brightness is, I will get 5 hours. With bluetooth 4 hours. It stretches to 6 with no bluetooth or wifi, and reduced brightness.

Don't really watch movies on mine, so can't really give an answer.

Considering the MBP has a bigger screen, it does very well when compared with the m1330. I have no trouble getting 4 hours on a regular basis with my needs.

I can't speak for the Dell but I have a 15.4" SR mbp. I go to school from 1-5:30 PM and my laptop is on the entire time (typing) with Wi-Fi only coming on every hour or so for 10 minutes and I dim the screen completely (almost turned off - to save battery life but also because lecture rooms are dark) and come the end of the day I have around 15-20% left of juice. Not bad, I guess.

Tests with MBP and the XPS 1330 say that the MBP will be able to play video from DVD for 3 hours, and the XPS 1330 a tad under 2.5. So the MBP battery life is a bit better.

With which battery on the M1330? With the 9 cell I believe it goes over 3.5hrs of DVD playback.

It was the 6 cell ( I haven't tested them personally, just asked people with the different laptops to test for me). With the 9 cell the 1330 is unspeakably ugly, so that is not even an option.

Not an option for who? The OP might not mind a 9-cell. It's not like you notice it while you're working anyhow.

I've already chosen the M1330 (with a 9-cell, haha) after realizing that I don't have the time nor willpower to learn OSX given my situation. It should suit my needs well. Thanks for all who responded.

In the end, it all comes down to you, and it looks like you've made a decision. Congrats and good luck with your new XPS M1330! :)
