My Mackbook Pro which is about 3 years old shuts down after about 5 minutes of use on the battery when it shows charged and the computer calculates about 2 hours of use remaining. The computer just shuts down with no messages about low battery or anything the screen just goes black and i have to reconnect the external power to get it to reboot.

Coconut Battery shows the battery at about 74% of the original capacity remaining. I have tried to re-calibrate the battery with no success.

Is it just time for a new battery?

I think that you should get it checked out at the apple store asap.

Are you using the right charger? I had a battery error once (it told me I could safely continue using my battery), and within 6 hours the battery overheated and killed my LogicBoard. MBP need the higher wattage cords than the MBA, and using the wrong cord can kill the battery.

Final point: go get that checked out, especially if it's not giving you an error. Battery problems can be fatal (for the computer) :(

Yeah just take it to the Apple store and they can figure out what is wrong with it. Had a similar issue with a older White Macbook and it ended up going through 4 chargers before I took it into the Apple store and they said it was because OSX wasn't up to date. After I updated I never got the issue again. What version of OSX are you running?

I am running Lion 10.7.4, which shows as being up to date. Just replaced the battery and will see what happens. Just trying to run it down so it calibrates the new battery.
