I have been using my Unibody Macbook Pro 15" running Snow Leopard without any problems until a few weeks ago on a trip the computer would shut down without a low battery warning several times.
When I returned I tried to calibrate the battery and than after that I got a service battery warning and the battery showed only 23% capacity from original capacity (on coconut battery). Last night I tried using the computer on only the battery and I was using it for over 3 hours than it just shut down.
I charged it and it took over 3hours to charge and now coconut battery shows that the battery has 70% capacity from original. This sounds like some pretty weird behavior from the battery or battery monitoring.
Does it need to be calibrated a few times to make up it's mind? or is the battery done for?
Any thoughts on what is going on are appreciated.

most likely the battery is bad

IDK.. I would charge it to full, unplug, run battery down to zero, let it shut down, recharge and see if it hits higher than previous percentile. also use that battery level indicator on the left side before you turn it on and tell us how many dots you have.
How long have you had your mac? how often do you use it? im trying to get a feel for it. -
Press Alt/Option and click on the battery status icon to see the condition of the battery as reported by the OS.
