After trying out a Mini I decided that I kinda like Macs :) and decided to upgrade to a MacBook... still not quite sure about making Macs a primary computer as I do a lot of software development (Windows stuff)... and Quickbooks Assisted Payroll doesn't work on the Mac either...

Anyway, my problem is that the Macbook screen exhibits a kind of flicker or waves when I reduce the brightness. I could probably live with it as I mostly use the unit in clamshell mode with an external monitor but still... do I have a bad Macbook or is this a common fault of this unit?

Yup, call apple. Sound slike you got a bad one.
Macs are just as good at doing development as any other unit. I do SW and web dev for work and school... Just get parallels and a copy of windows, or use bootcamp with windows.
    Or unix. Or linux...

Wavy flicker when you reduce the brightness is a sign of a bad LCD inverter. Definitely get it looked at. The display on my ThinkPad T20 developed this same problem.

Thanks. I'll bring it to the Apple store... I was just about to throw a bigger HD and RAM upgrade but I'll hold off until I get a 'pristine' unit... debating whether I should've gotten the Pro version since it has an expresscard slot, bigger screen and better GPU... will I see a performance improvement in apps like Photoshop with the x1600 GPU vs the Intel GMA 950? I'm pretty sure the GPU only really makes a difference for 3D stuff like games...

    Thanks again.

    Cliff.
