I'm trying to put my mic or even my guitar (yes i have a mixer) through the line in/headphone jack, but the internal mic is the only one being recognised.
What the heck? And in the mic options there is only System setting and built-in (both have the same resault)

    HELP?! Thanks :D

I have no idea why Apple did this but they require a powered input source to recognize it. Plug in a non powered or lower powered input (be it a Mic or whatever) and your MAC will never see it. Add an inline amp (even an inexpensive battery powered amp meant for headphones) and it will be recognized once you adjust to the proper power level.

Not sure what to tell you. I went through something very similar. Initially thought it was a problem with a headset or a MacBook pro. Further investigation showed it was not the headset but a MBA, MBP, and MB all exhibited the same behavior with multiple headsets. We added an inexpensive inline audio amp (a Sanyo) and the same headsets appeared to work. Might be a technical difference between amps or headsets (level, waveform, or who knows).

We ultimately ended up switching to USB headsets because it made no sense having to hook up an amp to make things work. So for anyone who thinks their 1/8" headset for skype etc is using the headsets mic I'd double check it because we found none of ours were without an amp! The usb headsets seem to work fine.

Yea jimboutilier is right, macs have Line in and not microphone in.

What are you not seeing input in on? Have you tried something like audacity and seeing if you get audio in that?

And it sounds like you are sending Line and not just microphone, but yea, it should work no problems with a "Line Out" source. Check out audacity and see if you see the input int here.

    I figured it out.
I had to change it in the OSX system settings. But you can only use in/out once at a time.

So i got recording working, but i can only listen to it on the laptop speakers.

Also my iphone headset does not do both in/out, only one or the other. Dangit apple.
