I recently posted about my experience at the Apple Store. I found that all of the MBs and MBPs on display ran very hot. These units were likely from the early production runs. I am wondering if anyone can comment on whether the more recent builds of either laptop run cooler? Also, how much cooler is each laptop when running off battery vs. being plugged in?

Well I just played World of Warcraft for about an 1 or 1 1/2 and the middle back of the bottom is scalding hot. It is of course plugged in and I told you before the difference I had plugged vs unplugged. I am getting a little more concerned after reading that there are now reports of batteries expanding and some exploding fromn getting too hot. Fortunately, my battery never seems to get more than slightly warm. However, right where the battery ends and back is VERY hot right now. If it helps mine is a week 17 build, which is fairly recent for Apple Store, online will be newer.

Well, I just got my fourth MBP. It is a week 21. After I get back in to town tomorrow I will play WoW on it and report back about the heat.

I just got my macbook about 5 days ago and it feels fine. It certainly does get warm on the top left but that's it. I can even hold my finger there for hours without feeling any pain. It's just moderately warm.

biiscit: It always confuses me when people say it only gets warm on top. Have you not felt the bottom? Do you only use it on a desk? Or does it truly only get warm on top for you?
-
I've only used it on my desk so I haven't touched the bottom yet. But the top seriously only gets warm. The heat issue was the only thing holding me back from buying the macbook: it would be my first mac after all. But I decided whatever and just went for it. I am extremely happy with it. I don't have any mooing nonsense, excessive heat, crashing, etc. The top left of the laptop does get warm, but just that. I can literally push down and leave my hand there for hours without feeling any discomfort.

It's good that you are not experiencing any problems with your Macbook. However, when people complain about heat, it is the bottom of the laptop they're referring to. This is not a problem for you, since you always use it on a desk. If you want to know what we're all complaining about, feel the bottom of the computer (back, left) especially when it's plugged in. That's why we're afraid to put these things on our laps

I purchased a MacBook Pro 17" built in week 24 (W8624...) and when the CPU is at full-throttle gives a temp of 62 degrees via CoreDuo. It is warm on the left side but I don't have the "moo" or the "whine" noises. The bottom is still HOT but I don't keep it on my lap.

I've always used a lapinator when I use laptops on my laptop.
They're small, light, and easy. -
I'm have a week 15 MBP, and I'm actually pretty comfortable gaming on my lap plugged in, though it does get really hot to the touch; As long as you're wearing jeans or something its fine. The only place on the notebook that gets extremely warm is the back left. I find if the battery is fully charged the notebook doesnt get as hot.
If you've ever used a Powerbook G4 you'd know that they get almost as hot, but the GPU wasnt quite as powerful so it never got quite as hot. The thing is, you probably won't do any gaming on your lap, so don't worry about the heat. On battery power it only gets mildly warmish anyway. -
My MB get hot at the back left also. Do you run corduotemp? What readings does it give you?
-
i get 62-65c with just internet browsing. i'm not sure what to do to bring up the cpu percentage to 100%, if anyone has any suggestions let me know.
-
I played WoW thorugh in Windows last night for about 3 hours and while it was hot it was not as hot a previous MBP's I have had. -
Encoding a video on my MB got the temp up to the high 70's.
-
anything else besides encoding that would take the cpu usage up to full capacity? i just got this and i have no software for it.
