I have talked to Apple about this but there was much scratching of heads - Yes I have fixed permissions and checked everything else, Yes I have Archived and Reinstalled and Yes, I have prostrated myself before a Jobs statuette at midnight and made an offering of Total Apple Fanboi blood (sorry about that pinprick you felt on the Tube, Budding ;) ) to curry His favour.

There is just something generally slightly screwy about the two Macs that I hammer the most. They aren't at a point where stability / etc is a main issue, but certain minor things don't just work and the usual fixes haven't dealt with the issue. Things crash occasionally as they're ending, certain things don't start up, weird USB-related problems, etc. Nothing really serious so far, but I'm at the same point as when I'd consider a clean re-install on a Windows machine.

I was kind of hoping that the SL upgrade would iron out the issues, but they haven't - in fact SL has thrown a whole new (smallish) bag of issues into the mix. That, and I'd also like to rule out any weird hardware issues which may or may not be a contributing factor.

So I'm at the point where I'm ready to reinstall. There is quite a lot to put on though and I'm wondering if there's a tool around that takes an inventory before the erase and guides you though 'you need to install x' etc. Is there anything like that, or is there a built-in feature I missed? It's not a huge deal - I can make a list, but I wondered if there was something to make it simpler.

.... LOL, easiest ... dig out the external drive, backup data, blow the drive and start from scratch. and FYI if your USB ports keep dropping in and out rip er apart and reflow the USB connector solder joints. for testing your USB ports I just chop off a usb cable, access the shield and 4 wires then use an ohm meter across all traces while shifting the port SLIGHTLY
