for example, I like having all my function keys act as the different built in adjustments for brightness, volume, etc. in most cases.
but, with applications like Maya, and a few others, it is much more efficient to have the functions keys set to their normal F1-F19 or whatever functions.
just figured I would see if anyone new a efficient way to do this.
EDIT: solution found here!

system preferences>keyboard & mouse>keyboard tab
there you can choose how the f-keys work -
yes, I know that. please take a look at my post again.

I'm afraid OS X does not allow you to set shortcuts for specific applications without using the Cmd/Alt/Ctrl keys.
You can always make Cmd+F1-12 do something by: System Prefs>Keyboard & Mouse>Keyboard Shortcuts>+. -
what exactly are you saying to do there ^^^^?
is there a way I can switch the FKey functionality using a keyboard shortcut? that would be perfect. -
You can add your own keyboard shortcuts using the F-keys, either generally or even for specific applications.
However, these are only for mapping the software-based function keys (i.e if your function keys are set for hardware mode, then you'll still need to hold down fn even for your customized shortcuts) - with the exception of F11 and F12 on the MBP, which are unmapped in hardware mode and only use software mode and will work always.
So in other words, no there isn't a way to preserve your function keys to use hardware mode for all apps except for certain ones. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
you could write an automator script to set that checkbox off and on with a keystroke, most likely. I personally don't know enough about automator except that apparently it works and you might want to look into that.

yeah I will definitely look into that masterchef341, that is exactly what I am looking to do.

still haven't found anyway to do this

EDIT:
updated first post with the solution!
Application System Preferences, is this possible?
