I've got a question about AppleCare. I bought an iPhone 3GS today, and wasn't going to buy AppleCare at the AT&T store, but they threw in a free Speck Candy Shell case and Car charger, so I went ahead and got it. The guy was talking me through it and everything and telling me how to register and sign up for it and all that jazz. No big deal.

And then it hit me. When I bought my MacBook about a year ago when they first came out (was that September I guess?), I also bought AppleCare with it. Only problem was, the guy didn't tell me that I had to register it, and since I gave them my info at the store, I just figured all the box had in it was warranty information. In case you haven't figured out where this is going, the short story is that I never registered that AppleCare for my MacBook. Never even took the cellophane off the box.

So my question is, can I still activate it now? I would just go ahead and try it but for two things: 1) It's not currently with me, it's back at my apartment (and I'm home for a bit), and 2) if I cannot actually use it anymore, I would rather try to sell it or something. Thanks in advance guys.

Do you have the serial number of your MacBook with you? If you do, you can always go to the Apple support site (in the following link) to check for its warranty coverage & expiry date:

    Good luck. :)

if your basic one year warranty is not over, you can still apply for apple care....

But you have to register the AppleCare (using the code from *inside* the box) before your date of purchase when the 1 year basic warranty expires to get the 2 year warranty extension.

Else, if you miss the cutoff you can put up the AC on Ebay as new & unopened - they generally go for $100-120.

If the one year window has elapsed, give Apple a call.
Many times if you are within a few months or so, they WILL apply it for you.
In this case, be sure to have your sales receipt of the apple care with the purchase of the macbook.
This will help your case that BOTH Macbook & Care had been purchased together.

    Thanks for the responses guys.

Now the problem is finding the AppleCare box. I have it stashed away somewhere in my closet from when I moved.

If you purchased AppleCare WITH the computer it was likely auto-enrolled.

    Go to: https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

Enter your serial number to see if your machine is under its warranty.

It should also say on your receipt, if AppleCare is on the same receipt as the computer it was likely auto-enrolled.

yeah.. used to you had no choice but to manually enroll, but the last few years if you purchase Applecare and the computer at the same time its auto-enrolled with no extra steps to take... so best to go to their website and enter your serial number and see when it says your warranty is up.

If it was no auto-enrolled for whatever reason... and is out of warranty... they may or may not help you out........ if you cannot find the Applecare box, then you wont get it at all.

Doesn't it depend on where one purchase both the MacBook & the AppleCare? I mean if both are purchased direct from Apple at the same time, then of course, the AppleCare is auto-enrolled. However, if both the MacBook & the AppleCare are purchased somewhere else at the same time, then the auto-enrollment of AppleCare may not apply, right?

I think it might be auto-enrolled if you buy online. He said he had the box, when, I got Apple care they sent me a envelope a could days after I got my Mac.

Okay... turns out I was auto enrolled. It just wasn't listed under my Apple ID with my iPhone. It was under my serial number like you guys said.

    Thanks, guys.
