    AppleCare expires in less than 3 years?

    I recently had my 2007 MBP's logic board and SuperDrive replaced under warranty and noticed on my receipt that my AppleCare expires earlier than the 3 years covered. I purchased AppleCare and activated it on July 30, 2007. With the 3 years, the warranty should expire on July 30, 2010. However, on the receipt, it says it expires October 12, 2009. Is this a typo or am I getting ripped off on my warranty? :confused:

    Although I'm new to Apple and Macs, I've never heard anything like it before...does seem like a typo, best to call their customer service and find out whats on your account.

    The AppleCare you purchased is a 2 year extension on top of the AppleCare which is activated from the day you purchased your Mac. Every Mac comes with 1 year of AppleCare from the day of purchase, and the additional AppleCare is an extension of that 1 year service.

    So, if you purchase a Mac on 1st of Jan 2005, it will come with 1 year of AppleCare which expires on the 1st of Jan 2006. If you then purchase additional AppleCare (2 year extension) in say, June 2005, your warranty would be extended by two years from 1st of Jan 2006 until 1st of Jan 2008.

    Apple does not provide a warranty service that covers beyond the first 3 years after the purchase of a new Mac (for obvious reasons).

    I am not sure if you could have bought the 2007 MBP in 2006 however. Only way would be that he got a system exchange. So his warranty should be ending sometime in 2010.

    Hey, good point. I overlooked the fact that his Macbook is a mid 2007 model. So with the additional AppleCare the warranty should expire on 5th of June 2010 at the earliest.

    Yeah, I activated my warranty the same day I purchased my Macbook Pro, July 30, 2007. So, there should be no reason as to why my warranty expires October 12, 2009. That date is so odd because my warranty started in the year 2007 and at the end of July..so why October 12 totally confuses me.

    No no no, actually that's not correct. If I'm understanding you correctly, your Applecare does not get extended if you get a system swap. All servicing and replacements are within the 3 years of Applecare. What Apple (and other companies do) does is guarantee the actually service performed for 90 days. For example if the OP got something on his Macbook repaired on the last day of his Applecare, Apple will guarantee that work for 90 extra days but it doesn't cover the whole machine for 90 more days.
    If he gets a system change the Applecare just continues from where it was left off, I've had system changes through Applecare before.
    Also it's still a good idea to get the Applecare at least by 90 days from the date of purchase because the free phone support ends in 90 days.

    Yeah, something's wrong there. Call Apple tomorrow, it should expire around 7/30/2010.

    Thanks for the link, HLdan. I checked and it said my warranty should expire around July 29, 2010. Okay, now I'm relieved.

    Only way he would have warranty ending in 2009 would be if he bought a 2006 MBP and had a system exchange to a 2007 one. Isnt that what you are saying?

    Well, I only had my macbook for about 3 months. It was the late 2008 model (intel integrated graphics). The fan went out, and I opted for the mail-in repair. My macbook came back damaged, the screen was messed up, and the case had black sticky stuff (like tar) all over it. I sent it in again, it came back, the screen, bezel, everything was replaced, but had a long black streak on the palmwrest, like someone with a dirty finger slid it across or something, and more black sticky tar in spots around the shell.
    This time I was angry, as it would have been the third time I'd have to mail it in. After being on the phone for some time with Apple, they told me to go to the local Apple store, and they'd arrange to do an express exchange.
    I went there, and walked out with a brand new, unopened early 2009 model (nvidia integrated graphics), and the genius said the warranty started over with that day (april 2). I checked the receipt, and it said warranty was good until april 2, 2010. Maybe they did that cause of the trouble I had, I don't know, but it was nice. :)
    For future reference, the genius told me, the mail-in repair is not Apple, but a company that is contracted through Apple to do repairs. He recommended any future repairs be done at an Apple store. :)
