Not sure if this has been posted yet..

    http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Console/Q7F2A3Q3

personally I am not so sure its a good idea, Apple has never paid attention to gaming before, just seems like they would be behind before they start.

EDIT: Maye this should go in off-topic?

I think it's a good idea, but I'm afraid their console would look near identical to a Wii, haha. I think it's a little late for this gen, but maybe focusing on next gen, giving themselves time to put a lot of effort into it, they may have a chance, and it may mean they can tune OS X better for gaming. Apple itself may have no experience, but they can always hire experienced people!

I doubt we will see a game console from them, ever. First they would need to get their computers up to gaming standards to build a reputation. That could be done, but it would require work on their part.

Highly doubt Apple will release a console. Don't hold your breath.

If anything, I see apple making a video game console rather than enabling their computers to game. Consoles do not need much modification and are good without much tinkering on the user's part. If apple did get into the videogame market it would definitely be cool, but I would agree with the original poster to say they would be very far behind reputation wise and game-wise. Come on, seriously you cannot expect a videogame novice like Apple to compete with the video game God: Nintendo.

P.S. SUPER SMASH BROS BRAWL IS GOING TO OWN!

Yeah, I don't see that happening. Apple simply does not have the insane amount of money to get into gaming. And it will likely take a long time before it would be come profitable anyway...

I'd say it's more likely they're trying to get more games ported over to OS X than anything else, and possible arcade type games on the appleTV.

I could see a handheld but not a console. Maybe not even a handheld. I mean come on. Thats Nintendos turf. Sony tried and it didnt work out that well. I dont think apple really has the brains to develope something like Nintendogs or God of War. Really you need people who have been in the industry to do that. We all know apple likes first party programs better.

The biggest problem with Apple making a consol is Steve Jobs will probably demand the developers use Mac to produce the games and since no one is currently doing that it would a problem. You would have to create a whole gaming development industry at a cost of ?????

Well, for consoles, companies use the HDK (hardware development kits) that Sony, MS, and MS uses.

But yeah, actually... I believe that both the PS3 and 360 HDK's were based on the G5 tower. I know thats what one of those two was using to demo the games before the console were out.

A large amount of a game is produced on Macs. IDK about programming, but almost all of the visual stuff is done on Mac, from what I have seen.

It depends on what part of the visuals you're working on. The 3d work is all done on PC. There just is not much CAD presence, and the last time I went to do 3d modeling, there just wasn't any top shelf programs on the Mac (stuff like Bryce, Maya, and some of the others). Now the painting and 2d graphical work, yeah, I can certainly see that all being done on the Mac.

I'd assume the majority of the programming is done on PC... though I can't speak from personal experience. I just remember one of the major consoles was using Apple as their platform to run demos.

Hopefully we'll dump DX soon and go to an open platform so a game can be develop on and for any platform :-D

Yeah Maya and 3d max and bryce would be better on pc due to open gl. And same goes for programming.

I have only been to EA and Radical here in Vancouver where there were definately no Apple products in sight. EA is useing nothing but "brand X" work stations with SLi .....
I haven't been to any other big name game makers so maybe I am just assuming
But then again I am also confused by all the people saying teh film industry is useing tons of Apple machines when every local server farm I have seen for rendering is useing AMD systems with MS Enterprise stuff

Any Workstation with lots of power will be able to run the proper emulator for Alpha testing and the Apple tower is definatly on that list.....

They had a console when N64 was around. Called the Pixin or something... flopped big time.

Maya Requirements, Bryce requirements (Both run on Macs).

Or did you mean other than those two?

Yeah, same with their camera line. I actually wouldn't mind Apple re-launching a line of cameras...I just hope they stay focused on all the branches of their business though.

Recently there have been a bunch of CAD apps moving to Mac. They may not have been available a year ago.

I wouldn't say "moving" to Mac but rather that now Mac is no longer using legacy hardware converting exisiting software to run on Mac OS is financially viable.

Definitely not Sony. And I wouldn't expect any Apple merger any time soon either. Apple's just got its own distinct identity, and mergers would change that.

Well I don't think a merger is necessary either... since Nintendos products all already look like Apple clones :p I see no point.
