I've been looking into buying one of the new Macbooks but since I am a student, my budget is very tight right now. I looked on the Apple website and the informations on their student discounts (for Canada at least) is very limited, not to say inexistant. Even going in the Education Shop and setting up a laptop won't give me how much I will save on it.

Anyone who has benefited from the discount could tell me a little more and how much they saved on their laptop ?

    Thanks !

Well I saved myself $100 from the student discount. It used to be $200 but it's cut in half now : / but I did do the printer rebate deal so I'm getting $200 in saving. That's in the US btw.

If you buy through the Education store, you can look to save about $50 on a MacBook. In all honesty, you'd be better off simply buying a Refurb unit from their Special Deals section... They have ComboDrive MacBooks for $899 and SuperDrive versions for $999. I've always recommended people buy one of their Refurbs whenever possible, they're treated just like "brand" new machines and get the same warranty as well... All while saving a good bit of coin.

Your other option would be to look at third-party vendors, you may be able to find yourself a really good deal on either a refurb or a closeout unit. If they're a reputable dealer (which there are quite a few), there's no reason not to buy a used machine... especially if they offer an extended warranty.

It all comes down to what you need your computer for... Do you really need brand new? Personally, I think the worst thing a person can do is buy brand new direct from Apple... It's akin to simply flushing a couple hundred bucks right down the toilet.

I still don't understand Apple's move of cutting educational discounts by as much as half. This is after the keynote in which Jobs called particular attention to his company's academic rise in popularity.

Maybe the manufacturing costs of the new MB are too high at the moment.

    $50 off $1399 CDN is under 4%.

If possible, see if your parents can get a corporate discount.

We would've saved $100 with my EDU discount, but we saved $180 with my Dad's corporate discount.

I live in Ontario, Canada and I just got my MBP (base model) today (retail) (yay!) and they gave $200 off If the person doesn't know what he/she is doing they might give you the $200 since they can enter what ever amount they want lol.

Tell them to add an extra "0" to the end of that number then :p

I wonder if there's still a nice discount for becoming an ADC premium member these days...

Yes, but the fee pretty much offsets the discount, except in the case of the MBP.
