Apple is milking it a bit much imho

I think apple has milked Core 2 Duo long enough. Apples lack of interest into upgrading to the i5 / i7 line is gross. Its not like i5 and i7 came out yesterday. Apple never kept up with the latest video cards or anything, but at least they used to upgrade their processors. Now its like they dont even care what they are selling as long as someone buys it.

I have a really strange feeling about that.. Apple Designed their on CPU from the ground up and has implemented just that into the iPad... Who knows.. Maybe they are thinking of doing the same thing with their Macs..

That's kind of a stretch. The cpu is basically just an ARM A8, which is the same type of processor you would find in an iPhone 3g s.

It's hard for me to swallow calling it "Apple Designed" and even harder to accept "built from the ground up"

No, Apple purchased rights to use the ARM design which has already been used in a wide variety of other products worldwide.

I've been waiting for a refresh on the cpu since like.. 3 weeks ago =/.. I was about to pull the trigger on a white unibody Macbook until I saw that "update on MBP" is soon.. which I've been waiting. otherwise, I would have bought the white unibody Macbook along with a Intel x25-m SSD..

With their adherence to ergonomics, there was no chance the quad core i7 would have made it into the Macbooks, so that just leaves the January launch of the dual cores. So Apple is, what, a few months behind?

Meh, it is March now. They might as well wait till June and iron out any little kinks here and there. :)

I wouldn't really mind if they use i3/i5 on it along with a better GPU is all I care about. The 9400m is so outdated.. and the CPU also x.x..

For which they purchased almost all of the design that is used. This is industry standard...ARM is a very popular platform for engineers. It is meant to make the design and development go that much faster.

Apple did nothing innovative or new here. They did something that was smart.

And the heating and power consumption issues they had.....

No way are you going to get the MPB along with that nifty little Power adapter which the Envy is not. I've used an Envy 820QM and it is hot under any appreciable load and it did and does have issues. Iif anything, it validates the need to wait for i3/i5's and dual core i7's for really thin and light laptops.

HP quickly scurried to the appropriate CPU for that chassis with the i5 and rightly so.

Yea Apple will never put a quad-core in their laptops, the battery life is a huge selling point for them. I'm just interested if they are going to go with ATI for the GPU or keep with nVidia.

They probably would have released something by now if it weren't for the announcement of the iPad. I would trash production of the iPad if it meant the refresh would come out 1 day sooner, lol.

But Apple is very lucky. If the HP Envy came with an i5, switchable graphics, and the 5830 at the same time, Apple would have been screwed, considering battery life was the only thing the MBP had one it. Oh wells.

The new i5's are working a lot better for the envy. Little/none overheating, and good consumption.

The new MBP will for sure NOT use the i7s, but the i5s

many strange discussion from people who don't know how to make themselves busy :) the funny thing in most cases people just want to have "the latest spec" for absolutely unclear reason. Just to continue browsing everywhere and ask stupid question you don't need even Dual 2 core :)

We are taking about laptop what hell the Quad CPU and latest GPU should be considered as high priority things. To me the most important question if the unibody will keep on the same level of durability and reliability, since previous generation of Macbook Pro was just a suck from many points of view: weak construction, heating problem, defect GPU, keyboard, etc.

Well the defect GPU was Nvidia's fault. As many of us have sadly experienced. :( Everyone in my house with the 8000 series has had them fry, if Apple goes ATI this time around it might peak my interest a little more.

Well I made the switch from a MBP to the Envy, adn I must admit the heating issue isn't that bad. If anyone has ever used a UMBP under bootcamp, knows how HOT THE MBP get. Don't get me wrong I have enjoyed my MBP, and that's why I can't bring myself to sell it lol.. But Apple really needs to get in touch with the newer architecture and get a refresh out the door. I agree with the OP, Apple has milked this long enough. And yet they continue to sell 3 year old technology, at over exagerated prices. I guess really the only one we should fault are us, the consumer. We are brainwashed ones who continue to buy it. That damn Kool Aid.

It's not like the quad core appeared out of nowhere.

Apple is not ready because Apple did not want to be ready.

Maybe they are working on a new quad chassis and maybe they will release a system that bypasses the integrated Intel graphics and allows Optimus. Who knows.

Apple does not communicate with its lowly customers because it chooses not too.

Apple has milked it too long, and that's not solely applicable to the Core2Duo processor.

I'd milk the Core 2 line as long as I can also. It has been Intel most successful line. Plus, you don't have to release a new notebook design, which means investing in new manufacturing, new marketing, and the potential for new bugs.

They also sell Final Cut Pro, which would be so happy on a quad core i7.

They are sell computers that designers use that would be so happy on a quad core i7.

But they don't think that way.

They would have to design a new case. The current cases hardly keep the current CPUs cool.

I would be shocked if Apple did this.

They will release an i7, but it will be the dual core version.

That the company that builds Final Cut Pro and laptops that designers rely on to not to even offer the quad core is rather insulting.

    Yes, they think differently (gags)

Apple releases when Apple is ready to release and their niche market will whine, moan, complain, wait and buy.

They definitely value look, feel, pocket innovation, weight and battery life over raw power and that is ok by me.

They have no competition within their own market due to tightly integrating their OS with their hardware. Let's face it. The faithful will not abandon in enough meaningful droves to change anything. The masochistic ritual of speculation and waiting is a time honored tradition among the Apple faithful.

Does this mean they don't suffer their fair share of defects, recalls and issues? No. Apple doesn't walk on water (albeit I tend to think Jobs would beg to differ from a personal perspective).

As for computationally intense software, Apple's laptops have never matched their CPU rich desktops, and this time will be no different. The idea is that a dual core i5 will be a meaningful upgrade over the T9900 equipped Macbook Pro.

If raw horsepower in a portable package is that much of a priority, go deck out an MSI, Clevo or similar laptop that is purposely devoid of special function keys and nifty control panels and is a industry standard laptop, smack a 920XM along with 4-8GB of blazing HyperX memory and a SSD or Hitachi 500gb drive of your choice, Go but the latest, greatest 10.6 and put OSX on it and basically have the most CPU powered laptop in the lightest package available for PC notebooks (~7lbs).

Or wait for the architecture shift which will still be a famous Apple rev. A (Gently pats Macbook Air Rev. A owners on the shoulder).

Outside of that, I can't help ya. :)

Yes, they are a niche market. They buy hardware usually to target one function and the market share shows that.

And I agree with you. The Windows platform has long been a viable alternative for the very markets Apple targets. The days of Apple+Adobe are long gone. The laptops are viable and will get the job done, but if you need cutting edge performance I would immediately look elsewhere to get the job done because your criteria does not match what Apple is targeting. For everyone else, they take the trade offs of the seamless integration of hardware/software, service and support and usually better than average size, weight and battery life.

But if you like Apple, want to be, "different," and like OSX then you stick with them and clearly there are enough buying Apple's hardware and with enough profit margins to keep it viably chugging along.

I used to be a pretty staunch Apple user, but I finally migrated away after my G5 Dual Core in '05. All I have left is still my 30" ACD and Extended Keyboard II w/ ADB->USB adapter. Oh, and an iPhone. ;) Albeit, I'm on the fence about switching over to a Bold.

With all that being said, I do wish Apple would at least test the waters with a cutting edge laptop which could be the size/weight (remember the beefier power adapter too) of like an MSI 1727 which is about as light and cool running (on a single fan no less) that has a Nvidia 250M under the hood along with 920XM support (or 720/820 if you like), 17" form factor and weights ~1lb more than the Macbook Pro 17" and is ~.5 inch thicker. The one notable difference is definitely the size of the PSUs required to power the newer hardware along with the noted hit in battery life.

It's not like they're going to introduce a Mac Portable'esque size (and the complimentary Apple wheelbarrow to go with it) to test the cutting edge market.

well, termal mode Macbook followed killed Nvidia faster and had influence to other components.

my interest is intel integrated graphics chip only ! :) To me the solution like two video cards collected in one place looks awkward. Unfortunately there is no way to customize it on apple site and it is not going to be happen at all.
More simple laptop is more reliable laptop. Using only integrated graphics can save battery life, make laptop lighter. Another thing that can be removed from macbook pro line is DVD and at last I prefer to see higher resolution for 15" display since text looks a little bit blurry and granulated because of low dpi. Of course everybody has own picture of ideal laptop, that is why Dell is success company: you have choice and can build what you want .

Intel's Integrated chip benches worse then the 9400M, that would be a down grade. They should go with a 9400m(or its modern counterpart) then kick it up to a 335m when it needs discrete graphics.

When they are still using PowerPC platform, it took them a while to do updates. I believe the reason was rather slow development from Motorola and IBM for their G4 and G5 chips.
Now that they migrated from PowerPC to Intel-based. They have no excuses anymore, they should keep up with other manufacturers in terms of refreshes. I see no other major brands who hasn't release their arrandale-based notebooks but Apple.
They are also slow to update their GPU. They have been using nVidia 9400 and 9600 ever since the release of unibody MBP which was in late 2008.
I still remember back in the PowerPC days, the difference between iBooks and PowerBooks were quite huge. PowerBooks always had better processors, graphic cards, and screen even for the entry level 12" PowerBooks. Now the difference between Macbook and Macbook Pro is rather blurred, especially for the 13" MBP. The only difference for the MB and the entry level MBP is the aluminum body and screen, the HDD is even smaller in capacity for MBP.
IMO, they should at least equip the MBPs with discrete graphics even for the entry level models to justify the "Pro" models.

I'd like an MBP with decen't GPU capability, a large HDD, speed isn't a big factor here, reasonably light on the 17" end, decent cooling capability and i'd actually be quite happy with a mid-high level CPU, personally i'm a big fan of the I7-620? The dual core one that performs as well if not better then the 720, thats ideal,

Switchable graphics would be nice, battery life i don't mind but better is always the way to go, lots of inputs and outputs, show some true support for different types of hardware out there to date! Decent soundcard haha, there are alot of things apple could do.

Or a really nice ballanced 15" MB, hitting mainstream high end performance as well as a rounded spec sheet across the board.

Well, I don't think they are going to do that though, when they can just sell a 17" MBP with only a 9600 GT with mid-end Penryn processor for 3-4k and people still buy them, no point increasing the cost for them using cutting edge technology, if they do though, it's probably going to cost 5-6k.

I've heard rumblings about HDMI as well - I think it'd be a nice idea, if anything on the Mac Mini.

Yes because I said that the macbook pro doesn't need HDMI, I am saying HDMI is a useless technology. That isn't putting words in my mouth at all. Nope, not at all.

ok then u didnt say it was useless, that's true. but for a multimedia device like the mbp, it should be there since it is a popular feature and adds more versatility to the notebook. I dont think it was u but someone was downplaying its significance. It is a good asset to a laptop.

yes, you're saying that because you don't personally have use or need for it, then nobody else does either and you can't envision why enough people could want or enjoy it enough for Apple to include it.

it's almost like you're offended by the very premise and completely baffled by the fact that some of us like to output digital audio and video from our laptops to our television without the need for multiple cables or dongles. like you might consider not buying if the laptop had the plug. because it's so useless for a MBP.

myopia. your optometrist can help you with that.
